BLUEFIELD, Va. — Melvin H. Asbury, 80, of Falls Mills Road, Bluefield, Va., died Monday, Aug. 13, 2007 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Tazewell County, Va., and was a son of the late James Roby Asbury and Fannie Edna Asbury. He was retired from Pounding Mill Quarry after many years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Marie Lowe Asbury; sons, James Lee Asbury, Mark Steven Asbury, Donald Wayne Asbury; and a brother, John Crockett Asbury.

EDEN, N.C. — Joshua Daniel Chambers, 23, of 1015 Haled St., died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 12, 2007.
A funeral service will be held today (Wednesday), Aug. 15, 2 p.m. at Fair Funeral Home in Eden. Burial will follow in Ridgeview Memorial Gardens.
Joshua was born April 8, 1984 in Princeton. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was employed by city of Reidsville in the sanitation department.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Rev. Carl G. Knight.

James N. Hagerman
JOLO — James N. Hagerman, 62, of Jolo, went to be with the Lord Monday, August 13, 2007, at his home following a long battle with cancer.
Mr. Hagerman was born October 30, 1944 at Paynesville, a son of Fannie Waddell and the late Clell Cooper. He was a retired coal miner from Island Creek Coal Company, and was of the Church of Christ faith.
In addition to his father, Clell Cooper; his stepfather, James Waddell; two brothers, James (Buddy) Cooper and Carl Ellis Hagerman; and his grandparents, John R. and Hettie Hagerman preceded him in death.
In addition to his mother, Fannie Waddell of Jolo, survivors include his wife of 43 years, Patty Hagerman of the home; three children, Teresa Johnson of Statesville, N.C., James David Hagerman and wife Kim of Jolo, and Kimberly Poore and husband Michael also of Jolo; three grandchildren, Kelly Ringley, and Brian Poore both of Jolo, and Cody Roberts of Coalwood; six brothers, Ray, Curtis, and Richard Waddell, Johnny, Doug, and Sonny Cooper; six sisters, Daisy Estep, Hazel Vance, Daisy Shirley, Thelma Bandy, Shirley McClellen, and Mary Sue Frazier; and a special little girl that loved him as a poppaw, Courtney Hess.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, August 16, 2007 at 1 o’clock with the Reverend Glen Blankenship and the Reverend Johnny Cooper officiating at the Old Samariah Regular Baptist Church at Groundhog near Jolo. Burial will follow in the Hagerman Cemetery on Rock Ridge near Paynesville.
Serving as pallbearers will be Justin Goodman, Matthew Grizzel, Jason Hess, Travis Estep, Larry Kelly, Jay Johnson, Henry (Squeaky) Stacy, and Cody Roberts.

PRINCETON — Mr. Robert Dale Lucas, 67, of 301 Kirk Street, died Monday, August 13, 2007 at the Maples Nursing Center on Bland Street in Bluefield.
Born October 6, 1939 at Princeton, he was the son of the late Dale Otis and Margie Smoot Lucas. Robert was a fireman for the Princeton Fire Department and a member of the Johnston Chapel Baptist on Halls Ridge Road in Princeton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances C. Lucas.
Survivors: Sons, Dale L. Lucas of Princeton, Robert Wayne Lucas and wife Nancy of Key West, Fla.; brother, Glen Lucas and wife Debbie of Princeton; sister, Ethel Tramel and husband Ray of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2007 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor John King officiating. In honoring Robert’s request, his body has been cremated and burial of the Cremains will follow at a later date in the Masters Family Cemetery at Camp Creek. PRINCETON — Margaret Helen Pennington, 78, of 116 Frederick Court in Princeton, died Sunday, August 12, 2007, at her residence.
Born July 2, 1929 in Pipestem, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ada Thompson Garten. She was a graduate of Hinton High School and was retired from Leggett's Department Store with 40 years service. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Princeton.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Marion B. “Benny” Pennington; five sisters, Grace Simpkins, Eva Ayers, Faye Jones, Thelma Cook and Ruby Garten; and two brothers, Walter Garten and Charles Garten preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sisters, Katherine Lilly of Hinton and Dorothy “Dottie” VanSickle and husband Boyd of St. Albans; one sister-in-law, Ruth Garten of Hinton; several nieces and nephews; special niece and caregiver, Sheri Walker; special caregiver, Rhonda Hatfield; and special nephew, Patrick “Pat” Carrick and family.

MORGANTOWN — Lewis Hank Robinette, 75, of Morgantown, formerly a resident of Welch, for over 45 years, died August 13, 2007 at Ruby Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He fought a good fight and finished well.
Born 1932 in Snowville, Va., he was the son of the late Henry Grayson Robinette and Maggie Addair Robinette. He was a 1950 graduate of Princeton High School. He also served as a Gideon. He was a retired meat manager at Kroger, where he worked 36 years. He was a member of the Wesleyan United Methodist Church in Morgantown. He loved the Lord with all his heart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Ellen Robinette and his brother, Harold Robinette.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Evelyn Ann Robinette; his sons, Jeffery Lewis Robinette and wife Terry, and Matthew Steven Robinette and wife Mary, all of Morgantown, and his daughters, Terri Lynn Robinette-Kramer and husband Michael of Pennsylvania and Lisa Robinette Colosi and husband Joseph of Rocky Gap, Va.; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

WAR — Stella M. Simpkins, 77, of War, went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 13, 2007 at the home of her daughter, Barbara Keene in English, following a short battle with cancer. She was surrounded by the love of God and the love of her family to comfort her.
Born September 16, 1929 in Caretta, she was the daughter of the late John and Virgie Hicks Blakley. She was a homemaker and a resident of English most of her life until moving to War 5 years ago.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cebert Simpkins; a granddaughter, Angela R. Simpkins; and two brothers.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Keene and husband Samuel of English; five sons, Billy Simpkins of Sandville, Va., John Simpkins of Ridgeway, Va., Ricky Simpkins and wife Teresa of Spencer, Va., James “Marty” Simpkins of War, and Donald “Eugene” Simpkins and wife Frances of English; and two brothers and four sisters.
Stella has 16 grandchildren: Patricia Dial, Lori Stacy, Samuel Keene, Shelia McClain, Sheril Simpkins, Kristal Thurman, Robert Simpkins, Danielle Simpkins, Darrell Simpkins, Lahoma Simpkins, John Simpkins Jr., Timothy Simpkins, Tommy Jo Moore, Shannon Coleman, Donald Simpkins and Michael Simpkins; and 13 great grandchildren: Charles Dial III, Timothy “T.J.” Stacy Jr., Whitley Christian, Bradley Kelly, Mindy Kelly, Joshua Simpkins, Brittany Simpkins, Gabriel Simpkins, Nathan Simpkins, Howard McClain Jr., Austin Flynt, Hannah Griffith, and Daniel Chancey.
Funeral service will be conducted today, Wednesday, August 15 at 2 p.m. in the Douglas Mortuary Chapel in War with the Rev. Jessie Estep officiating. Burial will follow in Dunford Cemetery, Bartley.

Rev. Clyde W. “Sparkie” Sparks
RICHLANDS, Va. — Rev. Clyde W. “Sparkie” Sparks, 74, of Richlands, went home to be with the Lord Monday, August 13, 2007 at his home.
Born August 12, 1933 in Tazewell, County, Va., he was the son of the late Gideon and Melissa Smith Sparks. He was a pastor of several churches in the Free Pentecostal Church of God. Sparkie was a barber in Richlands for over 50 years and was a member of Richlands Town Council for 12 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Faye Sparks; five brothers and four sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Juanita Baldwin Sparks; two daughters, Mrs. Sue Breeding and husband Kyle of Meadowview and Irma Gruver of the home; two sons, Larry Wayne Sparks of the home and the Rev. Mark A. Sparks and wife Tracy of Grover, N.C.; special friends, Brian and Jennifer Click and family; nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 16, 2007 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff, Va. with the Rev. Mac Rife and the Rev. Clyde Ball officiating. MATOAKA — William Howard “Bill” Straley, 77, of Matoaka, died Sunday, August 12, 2007 at Princeton Health Care Center in Princeton. Born November 6, 1929 at Matoaka, he was the son of the late Edger Straley and Bessie Pearl Worrell Straley.
Mr. Straley was a retired supply clerk having worked at Turkey Gap Consol and Buchanan mines for 13 years. He was a graduate of Matoaka High School. He had worked with his father in construction and at Bailey Lumber Company in Matoaka. He was an avid deer hunter and outdoorsman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Straley.
Survivors include two sons, Kevin Straley and his wife Tina of Bradenton, Fla. and William Howard Straley II of Bristol, Va.; one daughter, Sharon Cecil of Sarasota, Fla.; three sisters, Geraldine Davis and her husband Sam of Matoaka, Delores Delp of Jacksonville, Fla. and Garnett McComas of Waynesboro, Va.; former wife, Elaine Straley of Sarasota, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

PRINCETON — John Greever Waldron, 86, of 1010 Knob Street in Princeton, died Sunday, August 12, 2007 at his residence.
Born March 2, 1921 in North Tazewell, Va., he was the son of the late James H. and Mary Lula Havens Waldron. He was a retired car foreman with Norfolk & Western Railroad and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Pansy Lee “Peggy” Skeens Waldron of Princeton; one brother, Paul Waldron and wife Violet of Clearwater, Fla.; special nephew whom he raised, T.J. Skeens of Princeton; special granddaughter, Victoria Skeens; and several nieces and nephews.
