Deaths

Charles Lee Austin, 88, of Caudill Street, Pearisburg, Va., died Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at his home. Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, Va. is in charge of arrangements.

Stewart E. Broyles, 79, of 1411 South Ave., Princeton, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at Princeton Community Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton.

Thomas Jason Church, 28, of Maxie, Va., died Monday, April 30, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy, Va. is in charge of arrangements.

Ton delayo (Toni) L. Fowler, 35, of Bluefield, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston. Chapel Funeral Home and Cremations of Bluefield is in charge of arrangements.

Timothy Wayne Tarter, 49, of Berwind, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch.

Thomas Vernon Collins

CLAYPOOL HILL, Va. — Thomas Vernon Collins, 59, of Claypool Hill, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in a Richlands, Va. hospital. Born Aug. 28, 1947 in Erling, he was the son of the late Thomas Vernon Collins and Mary Caldwell Smith. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a former member of the National Guard. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and was formerly employed by Jewell Ridge Coal.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon McCoy Collins; two daughters, Sadonna Collins of San Antonio, Texas and Selina Attal of Henderson, N.C.; two brothers, Robin Smith and Randy Smith and wife Pam both of Jewell Ridge, Va.; sister, Margie Smith of Seagrove, N.C.; five grandchildren and three nieces also survive.

Graveside services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, 2007 at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va. with the Rev. Bill Keen officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640. Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the Greenhills Mausoleum by 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

Dillard E. “Dick” Landreth

BLUEFIELD — Dillard E. “Dick” Landreth, 74, of Route 1, Box 477 (Littlesburg Road), went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, April 30, 2007 at his residence.

Born on March 31, 1933 in English, he was a son of the late Dillard and Marie Mitchem Landreth. He had been a resident of Bluefield since 1972 and was a member of the Brushfork Baptist Church. He served his country for 22 years in the U.S. Air Force.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a precious loving daughter, Anna Marie Landreth Tabor Rodriquez.

He is survived and will be missed by: His loving wife of 25 years: Roxanna Belcher Landreth of the home; one son: Richard Landreth of Falls Mills, Va.; two daughters: Tracey Copley and husband Tim of Bluefield, Michelle Ray of Bluefield, Va.; grandchildren, who were Granddaddy's pride: Matthew, Adam, and Jonathan Tabor, Mikey Rodriquez, Justin and Kelli Landreth, Tyler and Adam Copley, Colby Ray; great granddaughters: Ashlyn, Elizabeth, and Lorilei Tabor; two brothers: Donald Landreth and wife Shirley of Abingdon, Va., Larry Landreth and wife Charlotte of Powell, Tenn.; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 4, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with the Rev. Jim Drake officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. where Tim Copley, Nathan Belcher, Delbert Mullins, Michael Belcher, Matthew Tabor, Adam Tabor, Justin Landreth, Mikey Rodriquez, Tyler Copley, and Colby Ray will serve as pallbearers. The WV National Honor Guard will conduct military graveside honors.

Carl (Junior) Lester

RED ASH, Va. — Carl (Junior) Lester, 50, of Red Ash, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in a Richlands, Va. hospital. Born March 23, 1957 in Richlands, he was the son of Dorothy Lester of Shortt Gap, Va. and the late Otis Shelton. He was a retired truck driver with McClure Concrete. He was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one son, John Anthony Lester; one brother, Jr. Shelton and one sister, Patricia Shelton.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Ruth Keen Lester; his parents, Carl and Dorothy Lester of Shortt Gap, Va.; daughters, Sherry Casey and husband Clayton of Raven, Va., and Renee Smith and friend David Cruey of Oakwood, Va.; sons, Jamie Lester and wife Melissa and Jason Lester and wife Tina both of Richlands; sisters, Rita Smith of Gilead, Ohio, Diane Shelton of Marengo, Ohio, Rose Welsh and husband Tom of Marengo, Ohio and Alice Lester of Raven; brothers, Lawrence Shelton of Ashland, Ohio, Lee Shelton of Wisconsin, Jim Shelton of Iberia, Ohio, David Shelton of Mansfield, Ohio, Jack Shelton and wife Loretta of Chesterfield, Ohio, Johnny Lester and wife Marcella of Shortt Gap and Ricky Lester and wife Shelby of Honaker, Va.; stepmother, Dixie Shelton of Marengo, Ohio; special grandkids, Keisha Smith, Kelly Smith, Bobby Lee Smith Jr., Clayton Casey and Colten Casey; two step grandsons, Jonathan Casey and Dustin Casey; special aunt and uncle, Franklin and Sandy Ball of Richlands; special companion, his dog, Demen; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Burial will follow in the Boyd Cemetery at Davis Mountain, Va. Pallbearers will be Gary Smith, David Whitt, Frell Howell, Willie Rowe, David Street, David Cruey, Matt Boyd and Ed Gilbert. Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Lester, Ronald Lester, Johnny Lester and Lyndon Mullins.

Lois Elizabeth Nichols

BLUEFIELD — Lois Elizabeth Nichols, 101, of 232 Perdue Hollow Road, Bluefield, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield.

Born on June 7, 1905 in Montcalm, she was the eldest child of the late David and Nannie Mullin Scott. She had been a resident of Mercer County for 101 years and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bluefield. After attending Concord College, she taught school in McComas until her marriage in 1925.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey E. Nichols; two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include: Two sons: Edward Nichols of Reisterstown, Md., James Nichols of Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one brother: Edwin Scott of Norfolk, Va.; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 4, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with the Rev. W.D. Hasty and Minister Frank Watkins officiating. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Bluefield where John Pope, Mike Pope, Eric Nichols, Bill Nichols, Andy Nichols, Bob Nichols, and Gary Taylor will serve as pallbearers.

Walter J. (June) Pruitt Jr.

RAVEN, Va. — Walter J. (June) Pruitt Jr., 79, of Raven, passed away Tuesday, May 01, 2007 at Bristol Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Born in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late Walter Joseph and Pearl Mae Hankins Pruitt. He was a retired coal miner and a member of U.M.W.A. Local 1594.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Clayton Pruitt; three sisters, Maudie Bragg, Bess Billings and Elva Griffith.

He was a life long resident of the Red Root Ridge section of Tazewell County, Va., and was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mrs. Biddie Marie Lambert Pruitt; one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Dye and husband Jimmy of Cedar Bluff, Va.; three sons: Milford Pruitt and wife Kathy of Raven, Allen Pruitt and wife Donna of Abingdon, Va., James H. Pruitt and wife Connie of Raven; seven grandchildren, James H. Pruitt II , Cassandra Dove, Cynthia Cordle, Jennifer Pruitt, Timmy Dye, Anthony Dye and Clarissia Pruitt; nine great grandchildren, Ryan Cordle, Nicholas Cordle, Faith Pruitt, Teagan Pruitt, Michaela Dove, Santana Dye, Aaleah Dye, Justin Dye and Luke Dye; special family friends, James and Barbara Dye.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff, Va. with Brothers James Dye Sr., Hufford Payne and the Rev. John Aldrich officiating. Burial will follow in the Pruitt Family Cemetery at Raven, Va.

Nancy Jane Rice

PRINCETON — Nancy Jane Rice, 68, of Cotton Place, Princeton, died Monday, April 30, 2007, at MUSC Hospital in Charleston, S.C.

Born Sept. 30, 1938, in Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Clayton Hedrick and Viola Virginia Elmore Hedrick. Nancy graduated from Athens High School and was the valedictorian of her class.

She was an active member of the Mt. Jackson Baptist Church in Athens; she was a former Sunday School teacher, Awana Leader and a member of the church choir. Nancy loved her family, enjoyed reading the Bible and books, and did cross stitching.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Fred, Buford, L.A., Billy Ray and Dale Hedrick and a sister, Inez Hedrick.

Survivors include her loving husband of 49 years, Ivan David Rice; three daughters, Darla Rice of Charleston, S.C., Pam Duncan of Portsmouth, Va., Heather McPherson and husband Danny of Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Charity, Jeremy, Amanda, David, Andrea, Connor, Kortney and Ashli; three great grandchildren, Hope, Faith and Cameron; six sisters, Thelma Richardson and husband C.D. of Princeton, Ethel Oxley and husband Bennie of Athens, Norma Gunter and husband Stanley of Eads Mill Road, Martha Redden of Athens, Ruth Porter and husband Mike of Glenwood, Grace Watts and husband Tommy of Manassas, Va.; a host of nephews and nieces.

A service of celebration will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2007 from Mt. Jackson Baptist Church in Athens with Pastors Gene Harman and Charlie Rice officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the Courthouse Road in Princeton.

Juanita “Pete” Stacy

SALEM, Va. — Juanita “Pete” Stacy, 76, of Salem, Va., formerly of Bradshaw, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in Salem.

Miss Stacy was born in Pike County, Ky. on March 17, 1931. She grew up in Bradshaw, graduated from Marshall University, and was a teacher at Bradshaw Jr. High School. Later Miss Stacy entered the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of Captain.

Her father, William “Munce” Stacy, her mother, Goldie Stacy, and her sister, Janet Lockhart, preceded Miss Stacy in death.

Two sisters survive her: Lorraine Stacy of Lakeland, Fla. and Dendra Engell of Salem, Va. Both Lorraine and Dendra are originally from Bradshaw. In addition to her sisters, Miss Stacy, known to her family as “Wen”, leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Miss Stacy was a daughter, sister, aunt, and a true friend who loved unconditionally. She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.

There will be a viewing on Friday, May 4, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at Lotz Salem Chapel, Saturday, May 5, at 12:00 noon.
