PRINCETON — Walter T. Anders, 83, of Kingwood, Texas, formerly of Frederick Court, Princeton, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007 in Kingwood, Texas.
Born on April 5, 1924 in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Glen and Naomi Anders.
He had moved to Texas three years ago after living in Princeton for many years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. Mr. Anders retired from the Norfolk and Western Railroad after 33 years of service, having served as construction project engineer for several N & W projects in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana. He was a long-time member of Kee Street United Methodist Church and had served as Chairman of its Administrative Board.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Ruby in 1999.
Survivors: Sons, Todd Anders of Kingwood, Texas and Gregg Anders of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Garrett, Lindsay, Logan, Rachel, Grant and Whitney Anders all of Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with the Reverend Bill Deel and the Reverend Tom Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery in Princeton.
Men of the Kee Street United Methodist Church will serve as pallbearers.

BLUEFIELD — Tom Thurman Carter, of 116 Virginia Avenue, Bluefield, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007 at Summers Nursing and Rehab Center.
Born Dec. 27, 1925 in Bluefield, he was the son of the late John S. Carter and Dora Richardson Carter. Mr. Carter had been a lifelong resident of Bluefield and was a buyer for Chad's. He was a member of the First Church of God and the Bluefield Moose Lodge.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by one brother, L.L. Carter and one sister, Marie Wilson.
Survivors include two sisters, Zee Walaska of Bluefield and Edith Roberts and her husband John of Lexington, Ky.; four nephews, Wood Wilson of Winston-Salem, N.C., L.L. Carter and his wife Jayme of Princeton, R.C. “Chip” Walaska of North Liberty, Iowa and Johnny Roberts and his wife Pam of Hookset, N.H.; and two great nephews, Brock Walaska and his wife Rae of Port Orchard, Wash. and Lou Carter of Princeton.
There will be no visitation or funeral services for Mr. Carter.

NAPLES, Fla. — Jane Taylor Copenhaver, 82, of Naples, Fla. and Claytor Lake, Va., died Feb. 22, 2007 after a long illness. She was born June 11, 1924 in Virginia and lived in Bluefield from 1949 to 1969.
Jane is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Eddie Copenhaver and their four children: Donna Land of Gainesville, Fla., Debbie Tomlinson and Barry VanDeMoortel of Naples, Jeanne Copenhaver of Naples, and Eddie Copenhaver Jr. and Kathy Terwilliger of Claytor Lake, Va.
She is also survived by grandchildren: Christy Tomlinson and Steve Bukovi and their baby Makenzie Jane, Byron Tomlinson and Sadie and their children Byron III and Ryleigh, Brett Land, Summer Land and Taylor Copenhaver.
Janie and Eddie are members of Kings Grove Methodist Church in Crockett, Va. Jane lived her life with great humor and leaves her family and friends with fun and fond memories.

TAZEWELL, Va. — William White “Bill” Deskins, 69, of Tazewell, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007 at Charlotte, N.C. Born Dec. 8, 1937 at Yukon, he was a son of the late John Albert Deskins and Hazel Virginia White Deskins.
He was a graduate of Big Creek High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Western Kentucky University. Mr. Deskins was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church where he served the church in many capacities and was a member of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church Foundation. He was a U.S. Army veteran and member of the American Legion Post No. 133 in Tazewell, Va.
He was vice president of the former Deskins Supermarkets, was past president of the WV Grocery Association, and had been recognized with the Spirit of America award from the National Association of Grocers. Mr. Deskins was past president of the Tazewell Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow and Skelton Fellow. He was a former member of the Tazewell County School Board, served on the founding committees of the Tazewell Area Chamber of Commerce and the Tazewell Recreation Board.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Sue Pruett Deskins; one daughter, Amee Beth Deskins of Laurel, Md.; one son, William Gregory Deskins and wife, Cynthia T.B. Deskins of Tazewell, Va.; two grandchildren, Adam Deskins and Katie Deskins; one sister, Patti Hardy of Mudfork, Va.; one brother, James A. Deskins Sr. of Tazewell, Va.; mother in law, Josephine Pruett of Tazewell, Va.; two special friends, Henry Nickels and Tom Brown both of Tazewell, Va.

ROCKY GAP, Va. — James Luther Gibson, 91, of Rocky Gap, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007 from the Bland County Nursing & Rehab Center. He was born on April 18, 1915 at Bland County, Va., the son of the late Molly Richardson and William Henry Gibson.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Gibson; two brothers, Edward and Bernard Gibson; and a grandson, James Tibbs.
He was a retired brick mason of 50 years.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Bub Radford, Bland, Va.; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Brenda Gibson, Bastian, Va., Torrnny and Sue Gibson, and Terry Gibson of Rocky Gap; three sisters, June Hoosier, Rocky Gap, Virgie Neal, Tampa, Fla., Audrey Shrader and husband, Watha of Narrows, Va.; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Lee Mclntosh and the Rev. Paul Looney officiating. Burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Bastian Union Church on Tuesday (today) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

BRAMWELL — Arthur M. Goins Jr., 80, of Simmons Street (P.O. Box 365), Bramwell, died on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007 at his residence.
Born on Nov. 26, 1926 in Bluefield, he was a son of the late Arthur M. Goins Sr., and Pearl Allen Goins. He had been a lifelong resident of Bramwell and was a member of the Elizabeth Bowen Jones Memorial Methodist Church in Bramwell. He was a retired dispatcher for Limestone Dust Corp. in Bluefield, Va. and was a U.S. Marine veteran who served in World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy H. “Dottie” Goins; a daughter, Jewel Ann Crabtree; a brother, Howard P. Goins; and sisters, Janet Bryant and Dorothy Lucas.
Survivors include: Son: William Allen Goins and wife Connie of Salisbury, N.C.; son-in-law: Charles Crabtree and wife Debbie of Bluefield, Va.; four grandchildren: Christopher M. Goins and wife Audrey, Brian K. Goins and wife Amy, William Arthur McKinley Goins and fiancée Nicole Brooks, Melanie Crabtree; four great grandchildren: Matthew Price, Steven Price, Hali Lynn Goins, Keith Allen Goins; one brother: William Goins of Indiana; two sisters: Lillian Frith of Rocky Mount, Va. and Zelda Cook of Bramwell.

Frances Ann Huffman
BLUEFIELD — Frances Ann (Clark) Huffman, 92, of 1352 College Avenue, formerly of Bishop, Va., departed this life to join her many friends and family members in heaven on Saturday, February 24, 2007, at Grace Healthcare in Abingdon, Va. She was born on November 14, 1914 in Bluefield, Va. to the late Issac White and Fannie Lee Clark.
In her early years, she worked for the Pocahontas Fuel Company store in Bishop. After she married, she was a wife and homemaker until 1962 when her husband was killed in the mines. After moving to Bluefield in 1966 she then worked at the S & H Green Stamp Store and Paper Doll Shop in Bluefield. She also did voluntary work and sit with sick family members at Bluefield Regional Hospital for many years. Mrs. Huffman was a faithful member of Trinity Methodist Church of Bluefield, held a life time membership with the United Methodist Women and Rebekah Lodge. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her two grandchildren, of whom she adored.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Neel Huffman, her only brother, Howard Lee (Ish) Clark, and one infant grandchild, Paul Daniel Christian II.
She leaves to cherish her memories her only child, a daughter, Phyllis Carol Christian and husband Paul of Tazewell, Va., granddaughter, Angela Lynn (Angie) Christian of Raleigh, N.C. and grandson, Christopher Michael (Chris) Christian of Piney Flats, Tenn.; two nephews, Robert B. (Bob) Clark of Mayfield Village, Ohio and William Issac (Bill) Clark of Princeton. She is also survived by her lifetime friend, Mary Ann (Large) Belcher of Johnson City, Tenn., a close friend and caretaker of many years, Kathy Shrader of Rocky Gap, Va., and two close friends, Mildred Bishop and Paula Hale of Bluefield.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 2:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va. with the Rev. Dr. Don Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, Va.
Friends may call Wednesday between 12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church.

Elbert N. (Junior) Keene
RICHLANDS, Va. — Elbert N. (Junior) Keene, 84, of Richlands, passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007 in a Richlands hospital following an extended illness.
Born April 12, 1922 in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late Elbert T. and Jettie Davis Keene. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II with the 276th Field Artillery. He was a member of United Auto Workers, Layman's Chapel Church and VFW Post 9640.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Dye Keene; and one son, Douglas Keene. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation.
He is survived by two sons, Frank Keene and wife Deanna of Medina, Ohio and James M. Keene of Garfield Heights, Ohio; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007 at Layman's Chapel Church in Richlands. The Rev. Thomas Stranger will officiate. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640.

ROANOKE, Va. — Bertha Lee Varney, 98, passed away at Magnolia Ridge Assisted Living Facility in Roanoke, Va. on Feb. 25, 2007 where she was a resident for the past seven years. Bertha spent her young life in Stone, Ky. and her adult years in Bluefield, Va. She enjoyed china painting with her friends and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bluefield.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Earl T. Varney.
She is survived by her daughter, Paula V. Fennell and husband Keith of Fredericksburg, Va. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Lynne Harris and husband Cliff of Roanoke, Susan Bennett and husband Mike of Hardy and Sandra Gale of Roanoke; three great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 3, 2007 with the Reverend Tony Ward of West End Presbyterian Church officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Interment will be private.

JEWELL RIDGE, Va. — Mr. Hurley Lee Webb, 53, of Smith Ridge section of Jewell Ridge, passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, in Raven, Va.
He was the son of Donald H. and Goldie Strouth Webb, both of Jewell Ridge, Va. He was a disabled coal miner and had resided in the Jewell Ridge area most of his life.

PRINCETON — Crystal Winifred Smith Wilson, 71, of 805 Newkirk St. in Princeton, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born March 13, 1935 in Moeghan, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Hillard and Lula Irene Catron Smith.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Willowbrook Baptist Church in Princeton.
In addition to her parents, one daughter, Sherry Collins; one grandson, Timothy Collins; and one brother, William Thomas Smith preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Clarence Cecil Wilson of Princeton; two sons, Clarence C. Wilson Jr. and wife Elizabeth of Houston, Texas and Brian Wilson of Cleveland, Ohio; two daughters, Kelly Washumick and husband Frank of Cleveland, Ohio and Susan Smith and husband Ernie of Indianapolis, Ind.; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Gross of Roanoke, Va. and Nellie Cerankowski of Princeton; one brother, Douglas Smith of Camden, Del.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
