BLACKSBURG, Va. — Edward A. Bender Jr., 77, died Thursday evening, May 4, 2006 at his home in Blacksburg.
He was born May 3, 1929 in Bluefield to Emma Herrmann and Edward A. Bender Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Emily Warner Bender and four children, Edward Daniel Bender, Floyd, Va., Samuel Craig Bender, also of Floyd, Margaret Rebecca Bender, Blacksburg, and Ellen Louise Bender, Roanoke, Va.; one granddaughter, from Blacksburg, Emily Davidson Bender. Also a sister and brother-in-law from Bluefield, Betty and Isaac Fuqua; brothers-in-law and wives, Joseph H. and Joan Warner of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., Laurean H. and Constance Warner of Lancaster, Pa.
Mr. Bender graduated from Virginia Tech in 1951 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. From 1951 to 1953 he served in Korea in the armed forces as a 2nd Lieutenant. From 1953 to 1958 he was enrolled in a program with the Pennsylvania Railroad as a Junior Engineer. In 1958 he accepted a position in the Engineering Fundamentals Department at Virginia Tech. He retired early in 1978 to pursue his real love, farming. He raised cattle and sheep on his farm in Floyd County, Va. He studied the latest techniques in farming from Virginia Tech. His son Dan is now carrying on his love of farming. He was a long-time member of Northside Presbyterian Church and especially loved singing in the choir.

Richard “Duck” Allan Cox
COALWOOD — Richard “Duck” Allan Cox, 40, of Coalwood, was pronounced dead on arrival at Clinch Valley Hospital, Thursday, May 4 2006, at Richlands, Va.
Born June 3, 1965 in Welch, he was the son of Ray Cox of Davy and the late Ruth Joyce Barnett Cox. He was a lifelong resident of Davy, living in Coalwood the past 11 years. He was a volunteer for the Coalwood Fire Department. He worked several years for EMS and Fire Services in McDowell County. He was employed at Nichols Construction Company of Vansant, Va. as a lineman. He was affiliated with the Baptist faith.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Gaither and Esther Patrick Barnett; paternal grandparents, Charles and Lillie Young Cox; several aunts and uncles.
Survivors include his father, Ray Cox and wife Shelby of Davy; his wife, Dianne Christian Cox of Coalwood; one daughter, Tiffany Lynn Cox and one son, Zachary Allan Cox, both of the home; two brothers, Ray Cox Jr. and wife Judy of Greenville, N.C. and Roger Cox of Davy; one sister, Becky Cox Sizemore and husband Robert of Maulden, S.C.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at 1 p.m. from the Community Church of The Living God in Three Forks with Preacher James Nagy officiating. Burial will follow at Hatfield Cemetery at Buckeye Hollow near Three Forks.
Friends may call Monday evening at the church after 5 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Jordan, Justin Porterfield, Jeff Pittman, Tom Fuller, Terry Richardson, Markus Kendricks, Damon Brigham and Ray McPeak. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and co-workers.

Bobby Lee George
BLUEFIELD — Bobby Lee George, 81, of 1222 Heatherwood Extension, Bluefield, expired Friday May 5, 2006 at his residence.
Born in Pemberton Oct. 28, 1924, he was the son of Eddie Lee and Macie Cook George, who preceded him in death. Mr. George was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bluefield and the Bluefield-Mercer Lodge No. 85 A.F. & A.M. He was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter No. 66. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was a 40 year employee of the Norfolk and Western Railway, serving as a fireman and an engineer.
In addition to his parents, Mr. George was preceded in death by three sisters, Joyce (who died in infancy), Iris Conner and Elizabeth Leedy.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Nancy Mays George of the home; one son, Bobby Frank George of the home; two sisters, Geraldine Elswick of Bluefield and Roberta Elliott of Bluefield, Va.; and special friends, the Walter Price family, especially Anthony, Amy and Brenda.
Graveside services will be conducted on Monday, May 8 at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Bluefield, Va., at 11 a.m. with Dr. Ed Fisher officiating. Those attending the services are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m.

BLAND, Va. — Ima Jean Harden, 68, of Bland, passed away Friday, May 5, 2006 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 22, 1937 at Ceres, Va., the daughter of the late John Adam and Ida Bernice Brewster Cregger. She loved children and flowers.
She is survived by her husband, Danny M. (Tucker) Harden; one son, James Melvin Harden of Bland; three daughters and sons in law, Terri Lynn and Mike Kincer of Wytheville, Va., Karen and Roger Faulkner of Rocky Gap, Va., and Norma Jean and Jason Haun of Bland; one brother, Richard Cregger of Ceres; three sisters, Frankie Cregger of Ceres, Jean Krick and husband Carl of Shoemakersville, Pa., and Janet Jack of Buchanan; three granddaughters, Lauren Elizabeth Faulkner, Lindsey Taylor Faulkner and Tiffaney Lynn Kincer.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate, Va. with the Rev. Bobby Lorton officiating. Burial in the Morning Star Cemetery, Bland.

ROLFE — Helen Jones, 79, of Rolfe (Box 565, Northfork, WV 24868), went to be with the Lord early Friday morning, May 5, 2006 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
Born April 30, 1927 in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late Edward Stone and Ada Hart Stone. She was affiliated with the Methodist faith. She was a homemaker, and a resident of Rolfe most of her life. She and her husband enjoyed flea marketing at Pipestem.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph Stone, Bill Stone, John Stone and an infant brother; one sister, Beulah Stone Wells.
Survivors include: Her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Ray Jones of the home; one daughter, JoNell Wells Jones Rose and husband Edward of Pineville; one son, Randy Jones and wife Elizabeth of Chino Hills, Calif.; one sister, Faye Metz and husband Everett of Cairo; four brothers, Raymond Stone and wife Pat of Hesperia, Calif., Roy Stone and wife Margaret of Forest Hills, Bobby Stone and wife Jeannie of El Monte, Calif., Eddie Stone and wife Anita of Hesperia; three grandsons, Chandler Rose, Patrick Jones, and Steven Jones; one great granddaughter, Karley Rose; a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Monday, May 8, 2006 at the Widener Funeral Home Chapel, Northfork, with the Rev. Earl Hill officiating. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell.

MANASSAS, Va. — Frederick Shrader, 72, of Manassas, died Monday, May 1, 2006 at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.
He was born March 20, 1934 in Bartley, son of the late Hallid M. and Beulah A. Delph Shrader. Mr. Shrader was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the UN Service Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korea Service Medal with two Bronze Camp Stars and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth S. Shrader and his sister, Thelma M. Kebert.
Survivors include three children, Denice Shrader and husband Dalton McKenzie, Kenny Shrader and wife Connie J., and Phyllis Anne Shrader-Robinson and husband John “Ted”; two grandchildren, Amanda M. Shrader and Jared R. Shrader and his ex-wife, Phyllis M. Shrader.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2006 at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2006 at Post Chapel, Fort Myer, Va., with Pastor Gretchen Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. with military honors.

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Ethel M. “Tootsie” Hylton Thurston, 68, of 115 Fairview St., Bluefield, Va., died Thursday, May 4, 2006 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Pocahontas, Va. and was a daughter of the late Harry Garfield Hylton and Cora Belle Sheppard Hylton. She was of the Protestant faith and, in addition to her parents, was preceded in death by sisters, Pauline Tabor, Madaline Jennings, and a brother, Donald Hylton. One of her greatest joys in life was working in her flower gardens.
Survivors include her husband, James Robert (Bob) Thurston Jr.; daughter, Pamela Gaye Raines and husband Robert L. Raines Jr. of Lyman, S.C.; sisters, Hazel Richards and husband Frank of Hurricane, and Joyce Cole and husband Bobby of Pocahontas; brother, Bill Hylton and wife Opal of Pocahontas; grandchildren, Joseph Robert Kelly of Bluefield, Va. and Jennifer Kelly of Lyman.
