NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. — Karen Cook Smith, age 58, of North Tazewell, Va., died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 23, 1954 in Mercer County, W.Va. and was a daughter of the late Ellis Cook and Arlene Neeley Cook Cline.

Karen was a 1973 graduate of Tazewell High School and had worked most of her life as a LPN; working for Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell, Va. for several years and most recently for the Southwest Virginia Jail Authority. She loved being a nurse, she was hard working and devoted to her job and to those she cared for. Karen loved spending time with her family and will always be remembered for her smile and laugh. She was a member of the New Covenant Fellowship in North Tazewell, Va. and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Judy Roberts.

Those left to cherish her memories include her husband. Timothy S. Smith; one daughter, Heather Lawson and husband, B.J. of North Tazewell, Va.; one son, Scott Donithan of North Tazewell, Va.; one sister, Faye Mutter and husband, Charles of Tazewell, Va.; four grandchildren, Gabriel Donithan, Chase Donithan, Isaac Lawson and Aubrey Lawson; mother-in-law, Betty Smith of Jewel Ridge, Va.; nieces, nephews, other family members and friends also survive.

Funeral services for Karen Cook Smith will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with Pastor Adam Frye officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Gabriel Donithan, Isaac Lawson, Chase Donithan, B.J. Lawson, Keith Smith and Danny Smith. Honorary pallbearer will be Scott Donithan.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2013.
