Mary Joan Blackburn, age 80, of Athens, W.Va., formerly of Welch, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 5, 2013 following a long illness at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, W.Va. Born May 23, 1932, in Welch, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William Watson and Mary Clark Whyte.
She was an X-ray Technician at Stevens Clinic Hospital in Welch for over 20 years. She had an unwavering faith in God, was active in her church and a loving mother and wife. She had a tender heart for animals, especially her faithful pet, Mocha.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband of 42 happy years, Douglas Blackburn, her daughter, Barbara Blackburn Church and son, John David Arkell.
Joan will be sadly missed by her children, William Doug Blackburn II and wife Sharon, Robert Blackburn and wife Susie, William R. Arkell and wife Tonya, Carol Gray and husband Larry, Andrew Arkell and wife Kailen and Mary Goebel and husband Herb, as well as her sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted today (Tuesday), May 7, 2013 at 12 noon from the Woodlawn Memorial Park, Mausoleum Chapel in Bluewell, W.Va. with Father Paul Manickathan and the Reverend Diane Hall, officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell.
Friends may call today (Tuesday), May 7, 2013 at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Bluewell, from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the McDowell County Humane Society, Box 714, Welch, WV 24801.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
