GRUNDY, Va. —
Edward Augustus Matney, age 65, of Grundy, Virginia, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013 at his home.
Born May 21, 1947 in Abingdon, Virginia, he was the son of the late Glenn and Eula Deskins Matney.
Edd grew up in Oakwood, Virginia and graduated from Garden High School in 1965 and attended Lincoln Memorial University where he received his degree in history in 1969, afterwards he taught school for some time and was the Administrator for Buchanan County, later he passed the Virginia State Bar in 1975 and worked as an attorney for Street Law Firm in 1980.
Edd was Chief Magistrate of the 29th Judicial District for 10 years and at the time of his death was an attorney at his law firm.
Edd was also a Commissioned Ruling Elder at The Dye Presbyterian Chapel in Dye, Virginia, a member of Buchanan First Presbyterian Church, President of Buchanan Dickenson Stone Mountain Health Council, member of Masonic Lodge, Kazin Temple Shrine. He enjoyed traveling, his family and his faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Deel Matney. They were married in 1974 in Grundy, Virginia and were happily married for 32 years. Also preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Joseph Bland, Gary Adkins and Joseph Altizer; one grandson, Winston Blevins and nephew, Aaron Bland.
Survivors include: Daughters, Christina Blevins and husband Eric of Bristol, Virginia, Ashley Dales and husband John of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; sisters, Glenna Altizer of Greensboro, North Carolina, Pamela Bland of Roanoke, Virginia; brother, Gregory Matney and wife Barbara of Bristol, Virginia; grandchildren, Hayden and Jase Dales; nephew, Wayne and wife Laura Altizer; niece, Megan and husband Chris Caps; other grand niece and nephews; cousin, Marion “Ike” and wife Joan Lemaster.
In honor of Edd's wishes, his body will be cremated and a celebration of life held Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church, Grundy Virginia with George Aichel and Bill Neeley officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church, 21223 Riverside Drive, Grundy, Virginia and Stone Mountain Health Center, 1721 Lovers Gap Road, Vansant, Virginia 24656.
Virginia Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of arrangements.
