CHESTER, Va. —
James Allen “Gabby” Stevenson, age 71, of Chester, Va., died Thursday, April 18, 2013 at John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell, W.Va. Born October 9, 1941 in Tazewell, Va., he was a son of the late James Thomas “Jim O.” Stevenson and Ella Catherine Hayton Stevenson.
Gabby graduated from Tazewell High School, received his Associates Degree from J. Sargent Reynolds Community College in Richmond, Va.; his Bachelor of Science Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.; earned his Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Troy University in Troy, Alabama. He served eight years in the U.S. Army and retired as a Captain in 1981.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, William “Buddy” Stevenson; two sisters, Martha Grubb Edwards and Jo Ella Stevenson Albano; one nephew, Bobby Edwards.
He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Delores Ford Stevenson; three brothers, Richard Stevenson of Suffolk, Va., Douglas Stevenson of Moyock, N.C., and George “Butch” Stevenson of Tazewell, Va.; five sisters, Alice Day of Burlington, N.C., Donna Jones of Tazewell, Va., twin sister, Irma Sue Tolbert of Bluefield, W.Va., Janice Spray of Fort Mill, S.C., and Debbie Mangus of Bluefield, W.Va.; two special nephews, Steven Day and David Day both of Burlington, N.C.; he loved all his nieces, nephews, many cousins, and loved the Lord.
A memorial service with military services will be conducted at a later date.
