Reverend Wallace W. Smith

PRINCETON — Reverend Wallace W. Smith, 79, of 1208 Harrison Street in Princeton, died Sunday, January 27, 2013 at his residence. Born November 24, 1933 in Gay, W.Va., he was the son of the late Reverend Ralph E. Smith Sr. and Glada Irene Riddle Smith.

He was a 1952 graduate of Parkersburg High School in Parkersburg, W.Va. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years and the Navy Reserves for five years. He worked as a structural ironworker for 14 years at Union Carbide Corporation in Marietta, Ohio, and became a member of the Local #787 of the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers Union.

Reverend Smith accepted Christ as a small boy and came back to the Lord as Savior on March 4, 1958. He served in the local church (Decatur Chapel) in Little Hocking, Ohio, as Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School Teacher. He was called by God to enter the ministry at Fall Missions Conference in 1966. In the fall of 1968 he entered Appalachian Bible Institute, now Appalachian Bible College, in Bradley, W.Va. He enrolled in the Pastor's Course and graduated in May of 1971.

Reverend Smith served as student Pastor of Pettus Baptist Church in Pettus, W.Va., for 1 1/2 years. He then served as Pastor of Covington Bible Church in Covington, Va., for 2 1/2 years. On June 17, 1973, Reverend Smith came to Princeton to Pastor Maranatha Baptist Church where he served 38 years and 3 months until his retirement in September of 2011. While at Maranatha Baptist Church he led the church in relocating to a new facility on Oakvale Road in 1980 with the educational office complex built first. The Sanctuary was built in 1981 and dedicated in 1982. His desire was to establish a Christian School that would instill Christian values in the youth of our area and provide a good foundation to build their lives on the truths of God's Word.  In 1980 Reverend Smith was the leading force in the foundation of Maranatha Christian Academy, now Mercer Christian Academy.

He loved his children, and his delight was to see them come home. He had much compassion for his church family and always offered support and comfort in a time of need. He truly had a Pastor's heart. He previously served on the Board of Directors at Appalachian Bible College in Bradley, W.Va., and Bluefield Union Mission in Bluefield, W.Va. He was an avid reader, sports enthusiast, deer hunter, and wood worker. Reverend Smith will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Tyler Smith; and one brother, Reverend Ralph E. Smith Jr.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 54 years, Beulah Boggs Smith of Princeton; four sons, Brian Smith of Princeton, David Smith and his wife Kali of Omaha, Neb., Reverend Douglas Smith and his wife Julie of Conway, S.C., and Patrick Smith and his wife Angel of Richland, Wash.; thirteen grandchildren, Cheri, Michael T., Jade and husband Adam, Austin, Sydney, Hannah, Michael S., Anthony, Joshua, Matthew, Nicolas, Daniel,  and Elizabeth; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harold Smith and his wife Shirley of Mineral Wells, W.Va., Theodore Smith and his wife Beverly of Newberry, S.C., and Richard Smith and his wife Sharon of Coolville, Ohio; three sisters, Kathryn Casto of Merritt Island, Fla., Shirley Barr and her husband Reverend Basil Barr of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Marian Somerville and her husband Lowell of Mineral Wells, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Joann Smith of Nashville, Tenn.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
