Okey Lee Sweeney

NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. — Okey Lee Sweeney, 80, of North Tazewell, Va., flew home on the wings of angels Wednesday, January 9, 2013 to be with his Lord and Savior. Following a righteous path and being a faithful servant, he earned his crown of life today.

Okey was born April 15, 1932 at Atwell, W.Va. and lived there until he moved he moved his family to Tazewell, Va. He was a disabled coal miner and member of the Local Union #7635 at Gary, W.Va. as well as an avid fisherman. Okey dedicated his life to the Lord on August 24, 1974 and was baptized September 15, 1974. He was a long time active member of Dial Rock Church of God. While a member, he helped to build an addition to the church and spent time managing the church food pantry. He also used his God given talent of playing the bass guitar for the Lord. At the time of his death he was attending Tazewell Family Worship Center.

Okey was preceded in death by his beloved son, Jerry Dean Sweeney; grandchild, James Lee Parsons II; daughters-in-law, Darles Ann Sweeney and Rhonda Sue Sweeney; parents, Ruben and Sallie Belcher Sweeney; brothers, Willie, Leonard, Hobert, Elmer, and Donnie Sweeney; sisters, Ola Addair and Bessie Keene; father and mother-in-law, Robert and Maudie Click.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen Click Sweeney. Together they raised five children. He is survived by four children, Connie Kinser and husband, Kyle of Tazewell, Va., Wayne Sweeney and wife, Melissa of Stickleyville, Va., Nancy Jones and husband, David of Tazewell, Va., Joann Parsons and husband, Jimmy of Woodway, Va. He was also a very proud Papaw to grandchildren, Robbie Hamilton and future-wife, Monica, Jason Kinser and wife, Jennifer, Jamie Kinser, Marsha Miller and husband, Paul, Dustin Jones and fiancée, Cindy, Lindsey Jones and husband, Matthew Young, Dean Sweeney II and wife, Regina, Misty Akers and husband, Michael, and Leanna Eldridge and husband, Jonathan. He felt blessed to be a great-grandfather to Riley, Chris, and Brandon Hamilton, Daniel and Phillip Kinser, Adam and David Miller, Cheyenne Sweeney, and Katelyn Eldridge. He is also survived by brothers, Bob Sweeney and wife, Selma of Northport, Ala., and The Rev. Hubert Sweeney and wife, Louise of English, W.Va.; sisters, Jean Goddard and husband, The Rev. Bob Goddard of Oak Lawn, Ill., and Judy Prisock and husband, William of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Being from such a large family, Okey was also a proud uncle to a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with Pastors Lawrence Hayes and Don Waddell officiating. Entombment will follow at Grandview Memory Garden Mausoleum in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Robbie Hamilton, Jason Kinser, Jamie Kinser, Dustin Jones, Adam Miller, and David Miller. Honorary pallbearers are Wayne Sweeney, Kyle Kinser, David Jones, and Jimmy Parsons.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2013.
