CLAYPOOL HILL, Va. —
She fought a courageous battle with cancer for the last 17 months.
She was born on May 19, 1931 in Alvarado, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Ted and Pauline Sweet. She had lived part of her life in Whitewood, Virginia and resided the last forty years in Cedar Bluff, Virginia. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother to her family. Irene loved to travel, shop and work in her flowers. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Mack Robert Church; two grandchildren, Bobby Dean Stanford and Kristie Mylynda Johnson and one brother, Herbert Sweet.
Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: Her Daughters: Virginia Carol Stanford and husband, Robert of Pounding Mill, VA, Kay Johnson and husband, Darrell of Cedar Bluff, VA; Her Grandchildren: Robbie Stanford of Pounding Mill, Virginia, Timothy Stanford of Pounding Mill, Virginia, Michael Johnson and wife, Melanie of Piney Flats, TN, Kimberly Johnson of Kingsport, Virginia; Four Great-Grandchildren: Koty Dye, Gavin Johnson, Connor Johnson, and Kynlee Mariella Johnson also survive her along with several nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends; Sister, Virginia Johnson and husband Raymond of Walnut Cove, NC; Brothers: Carl Sweet and wife Joan of Roanoke, VA, James Sweet of Jewell Ridge, VA; Special friends and traveling companions, Leonard and Nina Keene of Pounding Mill, VA
Funeral Services for Irene Sweet Church will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 14, 2014 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Roger Lester and Minister Bob Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Curtis Smith, Junior Sweet, Junior Johnson, Mike Johnson, Tim Stanford and Lucian Mc Quinn.
