William “Bill” Gartlan

BEAUFORT, S.C. — William “Bill” Gartlan, 84, widower of Doris W. Gartlan, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 13, 2014 from 3-5 pm at Anderson Funeral Home in Beaufort.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 1:00 pm in Carl Anderson Memorial Chapel with interment in Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Gartlan was born on March 4, 1930 in Lamar, WVA. He is the son of the late Bernard F. Gartlan and Ella Mae Gadd Gartlan.

Surviving are three sons, Keith Gartlan (Caroline) and Darrell Gartlan (Rita) both of Beaufort, SC; Richard Gartlan of WVA; one brother, Don Gartlan of TX and one sister, Connie Gartlan of WVA; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Bill proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict where he earned a  Bronze Star with Valor and Two Purple Hearts along with Five Bronze Service Stars.

He served with the elite Twenty-seventh Regiment Wolfhounds, one of only two such elite “Fire Brigade” units in the war, where he pulled double duty. He also was utilized as a nighttime sniper.

He was a life member of the American Legion and the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Bill retired from the automotive field after spending 40 years in management. After retirement, he spent his remaining years loving his wife with absolute devotion.

After leaving the Army, Bill made his growing family his priority. He was a man known for his integrity, morals, and loyalty. As a devout Christian, he gave his time as church youth leader in his younger days and filled many other positions in his church throughout the years. He loved his family with great passion and unconditionally. A trait that lives on in his children, grandchildren and even his great grandchildren.

We will all miss you Dad, Bill, Billy Boy, Granddad, G.G. and Pops. May you rest peacefully in God's ever loving embrace.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Hospital-Crisis Chaplaincy of the Lowcountry, 599 Stock Farm Road, Ridgeland, SC  29936.
