Quincy Darrell “Bubbles” Thompson

COAL CITY — Darrell was born in Devil’s Fork (now Stephenson), West Virginia, the son of the late Wesley Thompson and Oka Naomi Meador Thompson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Kathleen Thompson, and two sisters, Patricia Lee Thompson Farley and Wilma Ruth Thompson Jones. He was a 1948 graduate of Stoco High School, where he played football and baseball, and earned as associate’s degree from the former Beckley College.

Darrell was postmaster for Coal City for more than 35 years. He served as regional vice president of the National Association of Postmasters and was president of the Raleigh County Association of Postmasters for many years. He was instrumental in organizing the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department, served on the board of directors for Gulf Family Clinic, and worked for the Stoco High School scholarship fund. He eagerly looked forward to the Stoco Communities Reunion each summer, and never tired of working to improve his beloved Coal City area. Before he became postmaster he was a coal miner.

Although he lost his leg in a mining accident when he was 19, Darrell never wasted time in self-pity. He was energetic and outgoing, and usually had a smile on his face and a joke ready to tell. People he met didn’t stay strangers for long. He will be missed by scores of family members, friends, and others whose lives were touched and brightened by Darrell Thompson.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Lynn Thompson of Coal City and Leigh Ann Thompson Venable of Sophia; one granddaughter, Rebecca Adrianne Herron Thrift and her husband Thomas of Midlothian, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Canaan Edward Thrift and Kyelin Summers Thrift, also of Midlothian, Va.; sister, Erma Jean Thompson Ayers Allen  of Beckley, and brother-in-law, Eddie Jones of Coal City; brother-and sister-in-law, Edward and Dixie Blankenship of Spanishburg; he also leaves behind 21 nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Darrell’s final wishes, he was cremated,

Memorial services to celebrate the life of Darrell will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley.  There will be no prior visitation.
