Lloyd G. (Bud) Maxwell

SALEM, Va. — Lloyd G. (Bud) Maxwell, 74, of Salem, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 13, 2013.

He was born on March 12, 1939 in Whitewood, Va. to the late Isaac Drayton and Josie Cole Maxwell. He was retired from AT&T with thirty plus years of faithful service. He also proudly served in the United States Air Force prior to his employment at AT&T. He loved the outdoors and most any activity he could do outdoors. Golfing, fishing, hunting, and climbing terrain was some of the few things he enjoyed; however, it was exploring the outdoors with the company of grandchildren, that he enjoyed the most. He was known for his love of animals, as he would often feed his pet squirrels out of the palm of his hand, and all who knew him knew without a doubt the love he had for his dogs. Out of everything, the dearest things to his heart were his grandchildren. To the point of his illness, he was continually concerned with attending his grandchildren's sports activities. His family will always remember him as a caring and loving husband, daddy, and pappy to his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Johnie Mae Herron; brothers, James Raymond Maxwell, Milfred Maxwell, Bernard Maxwell, Harold Maxwell, Pierce Maxwell, and Robert Maxwell; and a stepson, Tracy Amburgey.

Family left to cherish his memory includes: His wife of 45 years, Irene Maxwell; son, Jimmy Maxwell and wife, Tammy of Kingsport, Tenn.; daughters,  Beverly Alls and husband, Steve of Salem, Va., Val Yates and husband Craig of Kingsport, Tenn.; stepchildren, Stacy Dale Amburgey, and Phillip Amburgey; sisters, Helen Drumheller of Richmond, Virginia and Juanita Tatum and husband, Elmer of Whitewood, Va.; sisters-in-law, Gay Maxwell, Shelby Maxwell, Mary Maxwell, and Carol Maxwell; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and loving dog, Princess as well as numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers include his nephews, Joe Maxwell and Charlie Maxwell; son-in-law, Steve Alls; and special grandsons, Zachary Alls, Quentin Alls, and Noah Alls.

The family will receive friends on Sunday evening, June 16, 2013 from 5 until 7 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, located in Salem.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, June 17, 2013 at 11 a.m., in the funeral home Chapel, with Pastor Ken Nienke officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, where military rights will be conducted.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718; or to Gentle Shepherd Hospice Charities, 6045 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA 24019.
