RICHLANDS, Va —
Marvin Glen Dunford Jr., age 70, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013 at his home.
He was born in Pulaski, Virginia on November 16, 1942 and was the son of Irene Ballard Dunford of Rich Creek, Virginia and the late Marvin Glen Dunford Sr.
Butch graduated from Pearisburg High School in 1961 and was an expert marksman with the Military Police in the United States Air Force from 1961-1965. Butch was a hard worker and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He worked for 23 years in the coal mines, the last 18 at Buchanan #1 with Consolidated Coal Company. Butch was an avid sports fan and a member of Richwood Golf Club. He played fast pitch softball and football in high school and in 1961 he scored the final touchdown recorded at Pearisburg High School.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by: His wife, Lottie Dunford; four daughters: Helen Young and husband, Sam of Phoenix, Arizona, Paula Robinson and husband, Jeff of Charlotte, North Carolina, Diana Price of Salem, Virginia, Melissa Gibson and husband, Howard of Richlands, Virginia; five sons: Arthur Aust Jr. of Richlands, Virginia, Chris Dunford, John Aust of Richlands, Virginia, Brian Dunford and wife, Carly of Milton, Florida, Bradley Dunford and wife, Melanie of Tucson, Arizona; two sisters: Sharon Johnson of Pearisburg, Virginia, Connie Smith. Also surviving are twenty-two grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and one special great-grandson, Harach Young.
Funeral services for Marvin Glen Dunford Jr. will be conducted Monday, June 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia. Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery, Tazewell, Virginia. Members of the Casey Shortt VFW Post #9640 will conduct military graveside rites. Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon-2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
