LA PLATA, Md. —
Joseph Patrick Akers Jr., 69, of La Plata, Maryland died on December 26, 2012 at Civista Medical Center, La Plata.
Born September 4, 1943 in Princeton, W.Va.; he was the son of the late Joseph Patrick Akers Sr. and the late Alma Lee Harvey Akers.
Joe was a graduate of Bluefield High School and was a service manager for the Victor Corporation and Free State Business Machine. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the American Legion and Lions' Club in Waldorf, Maryland. His hobby was carpentry and loved building things and spending time with his family. His favorite places were Chincoteague and Assateague Islands in Virginia and Pipestem State Park in West Virginia. Joe also had a love for animals, especially dogs.
He is survived by his wife, June Shamlin Akers; sons, Joseph Patrick Akers III of Kentucky, Michael Akers of Waldorf, Maryland; his stepchildren, Michael Grzyb, Bruce Grzyb, Paul Grzyb, Kathy McLaughlin and Katie Ghodsi; his sister, Linda Akers Davidson of Bristol, Va. and brother, William Akers of Bluefield, Va.; nephews and nieces, Jason Davidson, Chris Akers, Charlene Davidson Henry and Sarah Akers; uncle, James Harvey and aunt, Nancy Harvey Bailey; and special cousin, Carolyn Humphreys Lucas.
Mr. Akers' remains will be brought back home to West Virginia for burial.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Roselawn Chapel in Princeton, West Virginia on Saturday, April 20, 2013 from 10:00 through 11:00 a.m. with service at 11:00 a.m.
