Phyllis Arlene Rogers Blair

SNELLVILLE, Ga. — Phyllis Arlene Rogers Blair passed peacefully into the arms of her Heavenly Father on June 30, 2013, at the home of her loving granddaughter and caregiver, Toi Nicole Blair, in Snellville, Georgia, where she resided the last 3-1/2 years of her earthly life.

“Gram”, as she was affectionately called by some of her grandchildren, was born on March 28, 1932, the only child to Dobian Rogers and Annie Pearl Hestor Rogers in Maybeury, West Virginia. She attended the public schools in McDowell County until she met and married the love of her life, Edward Preston Blair, Jr., on June 14, 1947. That marriage lasted for over 36 years and through their union seven (7) children reached majority: Edward Preston Blair, III (deceased); Delci Shimeko Williams of Washington, D.C.; Shinozaki Patrick Blair of Rocky Gap, Virginia; Ferminia Genevie Anderson (deceased); Matthew Rogers Blair of Detroit, Michigan; Esau French Blair of Pontiac, Michigan; and Meyishi Pearl Blair of Charleston, West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband. In addition to her five children, she leaves to celebrate her life her “adopted” daughter, Eunice Jackson of Jackson, Mississippi; special daughter-in-law, Priscilla Cooper; special granddaughters, Joy Blair, Toi Blair, Dawn Williams Seigler, Natika Cromer, Melissa Ingram, and Sharnesia Swayne; special grandsons, Don L. Williams, Jr. and Myreon Blair; 22 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 4 great, great grandchildren; and special friends Frances Gilpin, Nancy Wirt, Alma Littlejohn, and Charlotte Wallington.

Phyllis accepted Christ as her personal Savior at a very early age and always tried to live the life of Christ, in spite of the many obstacles and trials that she experienced. She loved attending and working in the church. Phyllis was a good and faithful member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church until her physical limitations prevented her from attending.

Phyllis attended Marshall University and obtained an Associate Degree by attending summer school over a series of years. She worked as a domestic in private homes, and as a cook and cafeteria manager in the public schools of Mercer County, retiring from the position of cafeteria manager at Wade Elementary School.

A celebration of the life of Phyllis Patterson Blair will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles H. Collins, Sr., Pastor, presiding. Visitation with the family will be held from 11:00 a.m. to noon, at the church with the service starting at 12:00 noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Phyllis' memory may be sent to Meyishi Blair, P. O. Box 11931, Charleston, West Virginia 25339, to be forwarded to Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. In the alternative, donations may be sent directly to the church at 205 Logan Street, Bluefield, West Virginia 24701.

A. P. McConnell Funeral Home of Bluefield has been entrusted with the care of Ms. Blair.
