Virgil S. Shields

BLUEFIELD —  I have fought the good fight and kept the faith, and the Lord hath said, enter in my good servant, Virgil S. Shields, 91, of Ceres Road, Bluefield, and was welcomed home by his Lord early Thursday morning, October 4, 2012.

Born July 14, 1921, at Glenwood, he was the son of the late George W. Shields and Viola Bruce Shields.

Virgil was a graduate of Beaver High School. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy. Early in his life, Virgil taught welding at Glenwood School and later worked for WV Armature and worked on building the West Virginia Turnpike. He then worked for Bell Lines Transfer and retired from Smith Transfer in Green Valley.

Virgil had been a member of Greenview United Methodist Church since he was eleven years of age; he taught his first Sunday school class at the age of 16. He was a lay minister for the Methodist Conference for many years. Virgil served as pastor of the Hatcher United Methodist Church for 18 years and held Sunday night services at Hardy United Methodist Church. Virgil was honored by the West Virginia Conference as the Lay Minister of the year. He has also been the assistant Pastor at Greenview United Methodist Church. Virgil loved his Lord; he was devoted to his family and was a kind and gentle person. In his spare time, Virgil enjoyed working in his garden, hunting and playing various instruments.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter and her husband, Connie and Tom Viers; a great-granddaughter, Macey Whittaker along with six sibling: Gladys Croy, Velma Jones, Naomi Hager, Marvin, Stanley and Ralph Shields.

He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by the love of his life of nearly 72 years, Opal B. Tabor Shields; five children and spouses, Wilma and Chad Hatcher,  Shannon and Eda Mae Shields all of Bluefield, Sharon Shields of Princeton, Pam and Dan Blackwood of Charleston, Rhonda Shields of Bluefield; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Georgia Harman and Clara Severt both of Bluefield;  and a host of nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the home going of Virgil Shields will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 7, 2012 at the Greenview United Methodist Church in Green Valley with Pastor Christopher Gudger-Raines and Brent Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Friends may visit with the family Saturday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton and one hour prior to services at the church.

Virgil's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Family and friends may share online condolences via www.memorialfd.com

The honor of serving the Shields family has been given to the Memorial Funeral Directory & Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.
