BLUEFIELD — Harry Douglas (Gaffey) Smith, born January 23, 1929 to the late Weaver Dempsey and Ethel Birdie Smith passed away on March 5, 2013 after a long illness.
Harry was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked numerous years at N &W Railroad.
Harry was a member of Mt. Zion Pentecostal Holiness Church and a dedicated member of the Usher Board. Harry was a loving, caring, father to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ann Madison Smith; one son, Harry Douglas Smith Jr., a granddaughter Leetta Long Hughes, two sisters, BillMarie Smith, and Elizabeth Smith Davis, two brothers, Weaver D. Smith, Jr., and Winston Greene Smith, his brother-in-law Samuel Davis, and a nephew Samuel Davis Jr.
Those left to cherish his memory include his three children, Arlene Smith and Doris Smith Edwards, of Bluefield, W.Va., and Brian Keith Smith of Charleston, W.Va.; granddaughter, Davina S. Long of Bluefield; three great-grandchildren, Dontay and Deanna Long, and Cody Hughes all of Bluefield, W.Va.; one brother, Ed (Alice) Smith of Bluefield, W.Va., and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Homegoing services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at A.P. McConnell Funeral Home, 260 Cherry Street, Bluefield, WV with the Reverend Michael Bratton officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
