BLUEFIELD, Va. —
Rhea Clara Girod Carbaugh, 92, of Roscoe Street, Bluefield, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 24, 2013 at her home of 70 years. Born September 7, 1920 in Portsmouth, Ohio to the late Harry and Garnett Ashley Girod, she spent much of her childhood in Hemphill in McDowell County.
She served as the very first crossing guard for Dudley School for 12 years and later worked at Rental Uniform and Hart Electric. She retired from Joy Manufacturing in 1983. At the time of her passing, she was the oldest living member of Graham Christian Church. She also enjoyed attending Wade and Emma Chapel UMC Churches and Berea Christian Church with her family.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 44 years, Lewis Hamilton Carbaugh. Also preceding her was one son, Lewis H. “Major” Carbaugh Jr., four brothers, Junior, Johnny, George and Roy Girod and a sister, Mary Perkins and a great-grandchild.
Surviving are daughters, Judith Ann Hall and husband W.E. “Bill” of N. Tazewell, Va., Mary Margaret Hooper and husband Wayne of Scott Depot, W.Va., and son, George W. Carbaugh of Zumi, Va.; daughter-in-law, Nellie F. Carbaugh of Suffolk, Va.; 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the Graham Christian Church in Bluefield, Va. with the Rev Gary Lyons officiating. Entombment will follow in the Grandview Memory Mausoleum with grandsons serving as pallbearers.
Friends may visit with the family from 1:30 p.m. ‘til hour of service.
