ATHENS — Barbara Jean Couch Ofsa, 82, of 209 W. Broadway in Athens, passed into glory May 18, 2013, in the comfort of her home with her children attending.

Barbara was born June 2, 1930 in War, W.Va. to Clarence Homer Couch and Helen Johnson Couch. She graduated in 1948 from Nicholas County High School; received her B.S. in Education from Concord College in 1970; and her Master's degree in Communication Studies from WVU in 1984.

Barbara began her librarian career working at Concord College. She continued working as a librarian in the public school system and retired in 1997. A career educator, Barbara served as the Librarian and Media Specialist at Graham Intermediate, Silver Springs Elementary and Melrose Elementary where she was awarded Teacher of the Year in 1993.

She was an active member at Concord United Methodist Church, the Martha Pollock Circle, United Methodist Women, American Association of University Women, and the Concord Alumni Association. An avid reader, faithful Christian, and lifelong friend to many she continues to be an inspiration to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her sister, Margaret C. Jones of Kinsman, Ohio; her children, Dr. David Kiser (Lynn) Ofsa of Athens, William Marsh (Vicki) Ofsa of Doylestown, Pa., Robert Gordon (Susan) Ofsa of Athens, and Mary Helen Ofsa (David) Dennis of Poland, Ohio; five grandsons, three granddaughters, three great-granddaughters, one great-grandson, and the father of her children, Dr. William J. Ofsa of Athens.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Concord United Methodist Church in Athens. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
