Dr. Charles Morgan “Charlie” Olmsted II

BLUEFIELD — Dr. Charles Morgan “Charlie” Olmsted II, 69, of Bluefield, W.Va., passed away of a sudden heart attack on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center with friends and family by his side.

Born April 15, 1944 in Orange, Virginia, he was the son of the late John Bartow and Harriet Scott Olmsted. He spent most of his early childhood in Key Biscayne, Florida before his parents located to Little Rock, Arkansas. Charlie graduated from Hall High School in Little Rock in 1962 and the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1969. He went on to complete his internship, residency and postdoctoral studies in Biophysics and Radiation Oncology at LDS Hospital, University of Utah, Salt Lake City. He was a member of the Radiological Society of North America,  American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, American College of Radiology, West Virginia State Medical Association and authored several medical publications. Charlie also served his country as a Major, Medical Officers - Utah Army National Guard.

After appointments at The University of Missouri Medical Center, The Harry S. Truman Memorial Hospital, The Ellis Fischel State Cancer Hospital and Parkview Memorial Hospital, Charlie accepted an appointment in 1982 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center so he could be close to his family who had retired to Tazewell, Virginia. Charlie was a beloved cancer specialist at BMRC for over 30 years and he was serving his patients until the day he died. He loved all animals great and small and would even stop to move woolly worms out of harm's way.  

He donated freely of his time and was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club, the past President of the local American Cancer Society and was a frequent presenter at various tumor conferences. He enjoyed his friendships and was a member of several social organizations. He was an avid snow skier, bicyclist (in his younger years) and scuba diver. Charlie also enjoyed gardening and traveling.

Charlie is survived by two sisters; two brothers, three nieces, three nephews and many special friends: Robin Olmsted Hill, of Tazewell; Mary McNeal Olmsted, of Culpeper; Dodge Olmsted, of Arlington; Garrett Scott Olmsted PhD, of Tazewell; Wycliffe Scott Farquharson, of Asheville; Charlice Morgan Farquharson, of Tazewell; Virginia Olmsted, of Charlottesville; John Bartow Olmsted M.D., of Lynchburg; CPT. Charles Morgan Olmsted III, currently serving in the U.S. Marine Corps; James McCurdy Olmsted, of Richmond.

Visitation will start at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Mercer Funeral Home with services starting at 2 p.m. A celebration of Charlie's life and times will follow at Fincastle Country Club.

Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or the Humane Society.
