KEYSTONE — Fannie Simpson Poole, 102, of Keystone, West Virginia died on Friday, April 26, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Grant and Katherine Douglas Simpson, and was born in Elkhorn, West Virginia. She was the wife of the late Dr. George Richard Poole.

She was baptized into the Baptist faith at an early age. At the time of her death, she was a faithful member of Mt. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church of Keystone, W.Va. She was a graduate of Elkhorn High School and attended Bluefield State College, West Virginia State College, Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio and Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Mrs. Poole began her teaching career in 1930 at Switchback Elementary School in Maybeury, W.Va. In 1970, she was later promoted as Principal of Keystone Elementary. She was active in many civic and social activities throughout her career serving as Sunday School Superintendent; pianist for the Mt. Chapel Senior choir and youth groups. She was a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the oldest member in the state of West Virginia. She was also a longtime employee of Richardson Funeral Home as an organist and pianist.

Her affiliations have included serving on the National Board Security Council in Washington, D.C. from 1964-1966. In 1964, she was inducted into the New York Who’s Who Women of the World. She received many awards and recognitions for her outstanding service and achievements including an Outstanding Educator’s Award in 1982 from West Virginia Governor John Davidson “Jay” Rockefeller IV. Her most recent recognition was the Bluefield State College Pioneer’s Educator Award.

She leaves to cherish her memory her nephew, James (Barbara) Crawley of Upland, W.Va.; great-nephew, J.R. Crawley of Princeton, W.Va.; adopted family: Sabrina and Scott Morrison and Susan and Ronald Dodson, all of Bluefield, W.Va.; nephew, Jimmy Crawley of Upland; and several other nieces, nephews and church family.

Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday), May 3 from the Mt. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church of Keystone at 12 noon with the Rev. Dr. Earl Rogers officiating. Entombment will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Park of Bluewell.

Friends may call at the church one hour prior to service.
