James Mason Cockerham

PETERSTOWN — James Mason Cockerham, 90, of Peterstown, WV, passed from this life on September 2, 2013 at Lewis Gale Hospital - Montgomery, Blacksburg, VA. Born September, 1922 in Princeton, WV, he was the oldest son of the late Walter M. Cockerham and Ethel Lambert Cockerham.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Sara D. Cockerham; and sister, Mary Pluta.

He was a graduate of Peterstown High School class of 1941. He trained as an electrician at Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL, a mechanical draftsman at the International Correspondence School of Scranton, PA, and at Bristol Instrument School in Waterbury, CT. He was a draftsman at Celanese Company. He retired from the instrument department of Hercules Power Plant. His hobbies were restoring and collecting antique farm tractors and antique clocks. He gifted one restored clock to the Andrew Johnston House Museum of Pearisburg, VA. He was raised in Bozoo, WV during the Great Depression where he learned the value of a dollar from a hard day’s work on the family farm. He was a loving, humble man who cherished traditional ways and tried to keep the past alive through his works. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and will remain in their hearts forever.

Survivors left to cherish his memory include his son, James Steven Cockerham of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Mitzi L. Jennings of Princeton, WV; grandson, William Dustin Jennings of Princeton, WV; brother, Earl Dean Cockerham and wife Janice of Mims, FL; brother, Paul David Cockerham of FL; and his long-time companion, Esther Mae Ford of Narrows, VA.

Family will receive friends in celebration of his life from 2:00 PM through 3:30 PM, Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home in Peterstown, WV.  Followed by a Funeral service officiated by Minister Tony Reed, at the funeral home chapel. His family will accompany him to his final resting place at Birchlawn Abbey Mausoleum in Pearisburg, VA.
