Norma Jean Brumfield

MINERAL, Va. — Norma Jean “Nanny” Short Brumfield 78 years old of Mineral, Virginia passed away in her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, September 1, 2013 after a brief illness. She was born in Whitewood, Virginia, on the Knob, on November 8, 1934 to the late Marvin Enoc Horn and the late Mattie Lou Ellen White. She graduated from Whitewood High School in 1954 where she was a cheerleader, played on the girls basketball team, and served on the yearbook committee. After high school, she attended Richiands School of Nursing.

She was married to Albert McKinley Short on October 21, 1955 in Lebanon, Virginia until his death In 1990. She remarried on January 3, 1998 to Harvey Allen Brumfield in Louisa, Virginia until his death in 2001. She was a homemaker until her youngest child went to school in 1972 and she began her career as a nursing assistant at Stevens Clinic Hospital in Welch, WV. In 1985 she served as dietary manager at Gary Nursing Home in Gary, WV for two years. In 1988, Norma Jean and husband Albert moved from Big Sandy, WV to Mineral, Virginia to be closer to their children. She worked at Louisa Health Care Center for three years as a Certified Nursing Assistant retiring in 1993 due to an injury.

Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting, and gardening both vegetables and flowers. One of her favorite past times was watching sports. She was a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves, Pittsburg Steelers, West Virginia Mountaineers, and enjoyed the college basketball playoffs.

Norma Jean never met a stranger, she greeted everyone with a smile and usually left them laughing with her keen sense of humor. She always felt it was better to give rather than receive. Her unfailing generosity guaranteed no one left her home without taking something with them and very few left without having something to eat.

Above all else, she treasured her family and instilled in them “family comes first”. She was an amazing mother and grandmother, always leading by example and utilizing each precious moment she had to enrich the lives of her grandchildren with lessons only she could teach them.

She is survived by daughter, Sandra Jean Short of Orlando, Florida; son, Albert “Ken” Short, Jr. and wife Denise Short of Mineral, Virginia; daughter, Barbie Weilman and husband Pat Wellman of Louisa, Virginia; grandchildren, Albert “Mac” Short, III and Machaeia Ann Short of Mineral, Virginia; sister, Shelby Jean Clark and husband Jack Clark of Mineral, Virginia; sisters-n-law, Jeraldine Horn of Tazewell, Virginia and Margaret Brumfield of Beckley, West Virginia. More than 35 years ago, Norma Jean spread her motherly spirit and love to her proclaimed adopted daughter, Cheryl Lynn Stapleton and family of Beckley, West Virginia, including her husband Dennis and daughters Hillary and Hannah of the home. She also leaves behind the dearest of friends in Dr. Martha Smith of Gordonsvllle, Virginia, as well as, Zachary Gentry and Joshua Gentry of Mineral, VA who she claimed as grandchildren, along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, and friends, as well as her most treasured companions, Daisy, Whiskers and Sweet Ginger who never left her side during her illness.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her brothers Isaac “Dub” Horn, James Buford Horn, Stanford “Dick” Horn, and Elden “Dan” Horn, as well as one sister, Rebecca Diana Weiss; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Horn and Agnes Horn.
