Harris Crigger Crumpton

OAKWOOD, Va. — Harris Crigger Crumpton, 61 years of age, of Oakwood, VA, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013 in the Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, TN. Born February 20, 1952 in Durham, NC, he was the son of the late George Edward Crumpton and Pauline Crigger Crumpton. He was a member of the Garden Baptist Church, a 1970 graduate of Garden High School, attended Hiwassee Junior College, New River Community College and a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he received his BS Degree in Distributive Education. He had taught at Grundy Junior High, Grundy Senior High and Hurley High Schools, had served as assistant principal and principal of Twin Valley Elementary/Middle School. He was also an Adjunct Professor of Economics at SVCC. He retired in 2006 after 32 years of educational service.

During high school, Harris played football and was a member of SCA where he served as Parliamentarian. While attending Hiwassee College he played baseball and the trumpet in the band. He was a member of the Sandy Valley Lodge #17, a former member of the BEA, VEA and NEA, served on several state marketing committees, helped establish and also served on the Board of Directors of Buchanan Day Care. He was a former member of Oakwood Housing Board, and served on the Buchanan County Litter Control Board.

During his employment with Buchanan County Schools, he served as Assistant Football Coach at Garden High School, Golf Coach at Grundy High School and volunteered as weight lifting trainer. He was an avid sports fan, especially Virginia Tech Football, an amateur chef and loved trying different kinds of foods. He enjoyed golfing and hunting. His favorite title was Paw Harris to his grandchildren. His loves were God, family, friends and the children of Buchanan County. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher and friend.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 1/2 years, Deborah Gail Jackson Crumpton of Oakwood, VA; Daughter, Lauren Debbie Clevinger and husband Jason of Bristol, TN; son, Austin Harris Crumpton and wife Jennifer of Grundy, VA; brothers, Steven Noel Crumpton and wife Suzanne of Pounding Mill, VA, Dr. Brooks Ryan Crumpton and wife Patsy of Oakwood, VA.

He is also survived by his grandchildren-Jackson Alexander Crumpton, Sophia Brynn Crumpton, Jakob Wayne Clevinger and Lukas Dalton Clevinger.

Funeral services for Harris Crigger Crumpton will be conducted at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Keen Mountain, VA, Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverends Ray Amos and Jody Breeding officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, VA.

Active pallbearers will be Austin Crumpton, Jason Clevinger, Steve Crumpton, Brooks Crumpton, J.R. Vandyke, Eric Fuller, Brandon Matney, John Raines, Randy Jackson and Craig Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Phillip Keen, his grandsons, nephews, cousins, Carrol Branham, Clifford Helton, William Rutherford, Don Mullins, Lee Davis, Bobby Brown, Gerald Arrington, Dr. Vinod Modi, Larry Ashby, Jimmy and Estil Clevinger, Rev. Jere King, Rev. Rick Ellis and the men of Garden Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Keen Mountain, VA, Friday, August 30, 2013 after 5:00 p.m. Full Masonic Rites will be conducted at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Keen Mountain, VA, Friday, August 30, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.
