ABB’S VALLEY, Va. —
Walter P. Joyce, 96, of Abb's Valley , Va., passed away Thursday, November 15, 2012 at his home. Born in Crumpler, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lemuel Joyce and Abbie Lambert Joyce.
Walter was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was later employed as a shuttle car operator in mining from which he retired. He was a member of the Pocahontas Masonic Lodge No. 240 and a member of the American Legion Post No. 14. He was also an active member of Christ First United Methodist Church in Abb's Valley, Va. and enjoyed singing in the choir. Walter was an avid pheasant hunter and loved his bird dogs. He was the last member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ressie Hill Joyce; two sons, Charles and Clarence Joyce; four brothers, Lewis "Abe" Joyce, Alvan Joyce, Sam Joyce and Ernest Joyce; two sisters, Murlie Joyce and Martha Cornett.
Survivors include one son, Ronald Joyce of Gum Springs, Va. and one daughter, Orda Joyce of the home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Rodriguez Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Va. at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Gus Anderson and Pastor Carlos Hess officiating. Interment will follow at the Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Friends may call Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Rodriguez Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Va. Pallbearers will be Jason Boone, Shawn Brown, Leslie Brown, Clarence Boone, Bobby Baker and Tony Williams.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that contributions be made to the Christ First United Methodist Church Building Fund at 6972 Abb's Valley Rd., Bluefield, VA 24605.
