RICH CREEK, Va. —
Laura Mae Martin Crabtree
RICH CREEK, Va. — Laura Mae Martin Crabtree of Rich Creek, Va., died Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Riverview Nursing Home where she had been residing for several years.
Born March 2, 1913 at Goodwill, W.Va., Mae was 6 days shy of her 100th birthday. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Martin (1889–1961) and Eva Frazier Martin (1893–1997); her husband H.P. Crabtree Sr.; her brother Woody Martin and step-children Margarite Leach, Edith Johnson, H.P. Crabtree, Jr., and Bill Crabtree.
Survivors include sisters Virginia McClaugherty and husband Kellis of Bozoo, W.Va., and Irene Clevenger and husband Kenny of Blacksburg, Va.; step-daughters Naomi Morris of Raleigh, N.C. and Thelma Booth of Pearisburg, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews to include great-great-nieces and nephews.
Mae was a licensed beautician who dressed meticulously and always had every hair in place. She served her family, friends and church family in many ways. She cared for her ailing husband in their home for many years. At the age of 83, she was caring for her 103-year-old mother in their home. Caretaking was in her soul and she did it without complaint or the desire for praise. While caring for others, she managed to maintain her ties to the community through church and the use of her prayer tree and telephone. She was the family historian keeping journals and facts in spiral notebooks about details long forgotten or unknown by others. She started the Frazier Family Reunion to honor her mother’s birthday, and started looking forward to the next one as soon as one was over. Her photo collection of her life and family is amazing to most when you view pictures from the 1800s. Amazing is the fact that at the age of 90, she celebrated her sister’s 75th birthday by attending a tailgate party at Lane Stadium wearing Hokies apparel.
On Saturday, March 2, her 100th birthday, the family will celebrate Mae’s life at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home in Peterstown, W.Va.. Visitation with the family will begin at 11:00 with service to begin at 12:00. Minister Donald Henegar will be officiating. Burial will follow at Peterstown Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Alzheimer’s Association, the Riverview Nursing Home Resident Fund, or the charity of your choice, in Mae’s honor.
Online guestbook can be signed or condolences may be sent to the Crabtree family at www.broyles-shrewsbury.com. Arrangements by Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, WV.
