PRINCETON — Henry Lee Wood, 79, of N. 5th Street, Princeton, died Sunday morning, November 3, 2013 at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born August 8, 1934, at Gardner, he was the son of the late, Wesley Wood and Nannie Bell Knight Wood.
Henry was educated in Mercer County. Henry was a veteran of the Korean & Vietnam Conflicts, having served with the U.S. Army for 21 years, retiring at the rank of SFC. He had received numerous medals, commendation and awards during his stellar career with the Army. After his military career, Henry was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Princeton as a letter carrier for 17 years. Henry was an active supporter of the Veterans Support Group (Vet Center) in Princeton; he was a lifetime member of the DAV Post 31, Veterans of Foreign War and a member of the Princeton Moose Lodge #1521.
Henry was baptized at Immanuel Baptist Church on the 9th day of February, 1997 by Pastor Rick Sadler. Henry had Jesus in his heart and attended church when his health permitted; he truly loved his Pastor, Dan Jividen.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Marguerite Aniel Wood; his second wife, Mable Carper Wood; along with a son, Ronald Lee Wood; and five siblings; Lawrence Clifford Wood, George Willard Woods, Faye Kilbourne, Elsie Hess and Daisy Conner.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children and step children, Felicia Saunders & fiancé, Paul of Princeton, Deborah Osbun of High Point, N.C., Marguerite Watkins & husband, Brian of Archdale, N.C., Donald Lee Wood of Tampa, Fla., Donna Thornton of Kernersville, N.C., Teresa Martin, Jackie Sims & husband, Danny, Tammy Martin & husband, Carey, all of Princeton; daughter-in-law, Margaret Hamblin Wood of Princeton; his brother, James Woods & wife, Louise of Princeton; his grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Nicholas & Jacob Wood, Zachary & Sydney Saunders, Christopher, Wesley & Aaron Teer, Katie, Matthew & Allison Watkins, Jared & Jason Thornton, Joseph & Jennifer Martin, Michael & Amber Sims, Belle, Mason & Holly Martin, Seth Hurst; adopted granddaughter, Abby Presley & Ryland Barlow; great-grandchildren that held the keys to his heart, Mackenzie Saunders, Savanna Thornton, Ashyln Thornton, MaKenzie Teer and Isaiah Honeycutt.
Funeral service to celebrate the life of Henry Wood will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2013 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Dan Jividen officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Military graveside honor will be given by the Mercer County Honor Guard.
Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
