Stephen D. Shorter

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all of those that love his appearing.”

PRINCETON — Stephen D. Shorter, 64, of City View Heights, Princeton, died on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at his home.

Born September 23, 1949 in Princeton, he was the son of the late Bernard Shorter, Sr. and Shelia Simmons Shorter. Steve was educated in Princeton schools and graduated from Princeton High School in 1967. He enlisted in the Marine Corps with his best friend Mick Sylvestor, serving 2 years. Steve then worked for Combined Insurance Company of America for many years before opening his own insurance agency (Shorter Insurance Agency). He retired due to poor health in 2001, primarily due to the result of contamination he received while in the Marine Corp.

Steve enjoyed coaching kids in little league baseball. However, his favorite pastime was spending time in God's outdoors, talking to “Maybirds” in the spring matching wits with the “Wiley Whitetail” in the winter and fishing the cooler with big “Bluestone Slabs” in late spring. He was also known as WVU's Favorite Fairweather Fan! The Gobblers sure are glad he's not in the woods anymore!

Survivors include his daughter, Dr. Stephanie Shorter (his pride and joy) of Austin, TX. Brothers, Bernie Shorter and wife Sandy, Fred Shorter and wife Cathy both of Princeton. Sisters, Pam Leedy and husband Clyde of Princeton, Deb O'Connor and special friend Charles Miller of Salem, VA. Very special to Steve were his nephews and nieces, Jon, Ryan, Emilee, Joe, Jennifer, Jeffrey and Jason. His very special long-term caregivers, Betsy, Lisa, Rayan and Paul (Duke).

A service to celebrate the life of Stephen D. Shorter will be held from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 5:00 P.M. with Pastor Erma Jean Hudgins officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 P.M. until service hour.
