TAZEWELL, Va —
Samuel “Sambo” Cecil Davidson, 66, of Tazewell, VA passed away Monday, September 2, 2013 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born March 1, 1947 in Tazewell, VA he was a son of the late Marion Wesley “Jack” Davidson and Hattie Grey Crawford Davidson.
Sam provided for his family as he would say “by pounding the ground”. From a young age he drove a truck for various companies, until he retired at age 62 from Conway Freight after twenty years of dedicated and faithful service. Over the course of his life, Sam drove millions of miles from coast to coast. However, the men and women he met while driving were his greatest pleasure. His partner, Tom Lambert worked by Sam's side with the ability to know what he was thinking, so that no words were necessary. Others he enjoyed working with are best known by their CB handles, Hawkeye, Hollywood, Wompas Cat, Hard Rock, Groundhog, Coyote, Whiskers, and many others to numerous to mention. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. The compassionate and unselfish care given by Beverly Shelton, Kristen Nelson, and the staff of Legacy Hospice, during the course of his illness helped to make his and Connie's days better.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Nancy “Fuzzy” Moorefield Rosenbaum and Helen “Wit” Lucado; two brothers, Marion Wesley “Jr.” Davidson and Emory “Jigo” Davidson; father in law, Everett Lee Hurd and brother in law, Tracey “Bowzer” Hurd.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of forty years, Connie Hurd Davidson; two loving sons, Sam Wesley and wife, Ada (better known as “Ada Mae” to Sam), and Cody Jacob “Sambo Jr.” all of Tazewell, VA; special mother in law, Dorothy Hurd Neal and her husband, Norman of Tazewell, VA; sister, Ann Milkes and husband, Art of Gaithersburg, MD; brother, Robert Henry “Bobby” Davidson and wife, Priscilla of North Tazewell, VA; brother in law, Thomas Everett “Eddie” Hurd and wife, Terri of Tazewell, VA; sister in law, Teresa Ann Hurd of Mt. Airy, NC; two precious grandchildren that were the apple of his eye, Jackson Wesley and Juliana Nicole Davidson of Tazewell, VA.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 PM Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with Kermit Fowler, Jr. Elder in the Princeton, WV Jehovah's Witnesses Congregation. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 230 Charwood Drive, Abingdon, VA 24210.
