PETERSTOWN — John Frederick “Fred” Akers, 85, of Countryview Assisted Living in Peterstown, WV, a former resident of Princeton, died Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at his residence. Born October 16, 1927 in Narrows, VA he was the son of the late Fred J. Akers and Effie Farley Akers.

Fred served his country honorably during the end of World War II while enlisted in the U.S. Navy and then served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War while serving in the US. Army. Fred was a retired Millwright with Local Union #319 in Roanoke, VA with thirty-nine years service retiring at age 79. He was a long time member of the Narrows, VA VFW Post #6000 receiving his 50 Year Continuous Service Award in 1996. Fred was also a lifelong member of the Willowton Christian Church  and dearly loved his church family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, John C. “Johnny” Akers and Charles F. Akers.

Survivors include his beloved wife of forty-one years, Lois Ann Meadows Akers of Countryview Assisted Living in Peterstown, WV, formerly of Princeton; two daughters, Carole Higginbotham and husband Tommy of Princeton, their daughter, Adrienne and their son, Jonathan both of which he adored, and Sue Anderson of Narrows, VA and her sons, Michael Anderson and Aaron Anderson; stepchildren that he loved dearly and considered his own, Regina Meadows and husband Gerald, David Meadows and wife Dreama, Reginald Meadows and wife Tammy all of Princeton, Gregory Meadows and wife Careen of Peterstown, WV, and Ronald Meadows and wife Carleen of Bluefield, VA; eighteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and his twin sister, Betty Akers Conner of Roanoke, VA.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Monday, August 26, 2013 at the Willowton Christian Church in Willowton, WV with Pastor Tony Reed and Pastor Mike Robertson officiating. Burial will follow at the Willowton Cemetery with the Mercer County Veterans Council conducting military graveside rites. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at the Willowton Christian Church from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Sunday, August 25, 2013.
