Kathleen Ferguson Thompson

SPANISHBURG — Patricia Kathleen Ferguson Thompson, 80, of Spanishburg, formerly of Glade Springs; Ocala, Florida; and Coal City, died Thursday, March 14, 2013.

Kathleen was born in Camp Creek, Mercer County, WV, the daughter of the late David Lawrence Ferguson and Fern Glen Martin Ferguson Roseblock. She was preceded in death by four brothers: David Clement, Green Lawson, Ralph Burl and Herman Evestus Ferguson.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Q. Darrell “Bubbles” Thompson; two daughters, Kathy Lynn Thompson of Coal City and Leigh Ann Thompson Herron Venable; one grandchild, Rebecca Adrianne Herron Thrift and her husband, Thomas Thrift, of Midlothian, VA; two great-grandchildren, Canaan Edward Thrift and Kyelin Summers Thrift, also of Midlothian; one sister, Dixie Ferguson Blankenship and her husband, Edward Blankenship, of Spanishburg; two sisters-in-law, Erma Jean Thompson Ayers Allen of Glade Springs and Madonna Setliff Ferguson of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Eddie L. Jones of Coal City, and 21 much loved nieces and nephews.

Kathleen graduated from Stoco High School and Concord College (now Concord University). She taught English grammar, literature, reading, composition and research at Stoco Junior High School, Stoco High School and Independence High School for 24 years. Students considered her tough but fair; friends and family knew her as a woman of boundless generosity, great intellectual curiosity and great spirit. Those close to her knew when they needed help Kathleen would offer it before they asked. Her family was the axis on which her world revolved, and she was the axis for theirs. Her other interests included reading, music, painting and duplicate bridge.

In keeping with her wishes, she was cremated and the ashes will be interred in a private family service at the Ferguson Family Cemetery in Fairview. A public celebration of her life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013 in the Little Theater at Independence High School. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Thompson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be made payable to Independence High School, P.O. Box 1595, Coal City, WV 25823 with Thompson Memorial Scholarship on the memo line, or donated by PayPal to thompsonmemorialscholarship@gmail.com

All who truly knew and loved our mother/grandmother/great-grandmother/aunt/sister/sister-in-law and friend know that Kathleen would say, in the words of one of her favorite authors, William Shakespeare, that she is not really gone from us, but is only, like Romeo, “some other where.”

Private online condolences, floral gifts, and other expressions of sympathy available at www.roseandquesenberry.net

Arrangements with Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, 1901 S. Kanawha St., Beckley.
