Columbus Herbert “Chalk Eye” Kinder

TAZEWELL, Va. — Columbus Herbert “Chalk Eye” Kinder, age 85, of Tazewell, Va., died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born March 31, 1927 in Tazewell, Va. and was a son of the late James Melvin Kinder and Georgia Pearl Puckett Kinder.

Mr. Kinder was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County, Va. and was a retired Superintendent with the Virginia Department of Transportation, having worked at VDOT for over forty-three years. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater as a Tank Commander with F Company, 28th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. Mr. Kinder was a Past Commander of the American Legion Post #0133 in Tazewell, Va. and was also a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, Va.

He enjoyed working with the youth of Tazewell back in the 1970s, coaching and umpiring Little League Baseball. During the season you could find him at home watching his favorite team the Baltimore Orioles. He was of the Methodist faith; a man among men and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Bill “Spider” Kinder; son-in-law, Sam F. White Jr., who passed away on Monday, March 11, 2013.

Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of sixty-five years, Virginia Annie Dillow Kinder; daughter, Nancy Carol Kinder White of North Tazewell, Va.; sons, Michael Herbert Kinder of Baptist Valley, Va. and David Edward “Radar” Kinder and wife, Anita of Adria, Va.; brothers, James Nelson “J.N.” Kinder and wife, Mary Ann of Waynesboro, Va. and Ralph E. Kinder and wife, Dorothy of Tazewell, Va.; grandchildren, Christopher H. “Chris” White and wife, Jennifer of Tazewell, Va., James Robert “Jimmy” White of North Tazewell, Va., Michael Matthew Kinder of Dumfries, Va., and Joshua Reece Kinder of Adria, Va.; great-grandsons, Adam Christopher White and Nicholas Gage White; several nieces and nephews, cousins and other family members and friends.

Funeral services for Columbus Herbert “Chalk Eye” Kinder will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. today (Wednesday), April 3, 2013 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with his grandson, the Rev. Chris White and the Rev. Danielle Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Chris White, Jimmy White, Mathew Kinder, Joshua Kinder, Adam White, Nick White, and Jeff Crouse. John Q. Wimmer and Perry Allison Sr. will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 12:00 noon today (Wednesday), April 3, 2013.
