BISHOP, Va. — Burley E. Willis, age 92, of Bishop, Va., died Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Welmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn. Born November 24, 1920 at Alva, Ky., he was a son of the late Jonah E. Willis and Betty James Willis.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Burley was a coal miner by trade, having worked fifty years at US Steel Gary #14 mines. He was an active member the UMWA Local #6025 at Bishop, Va. After retiring from the mines, he spent his time gardening and doing yard work and talking with his special friends and neighbors, Tim Watkins and Bill Vance. Burley was loved and cherished by all who knew him. During his illness, his days were made more comfortable by the exceptional and compassionate care given by the staff of Welmont Hospice House of Bristol, Tenn.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Opal McKeehan and Christine Buck; three brothers, Steward Willis, Harold Willis, and Jonah F. Willis Jr.; son-in-law, Norman Poskas who died March 13, 2013.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ollie Lester Willis; one daughter, Charlotte Willis Poskas of North Tazewell, Va.; one son, Burley Ray Willis and fiancée, Lynn Quillen of Tazewell, Va.; two brothers, Hardrick Willis of Cincinnati, Ohio and Paul Willis and wife, Joann of Pineville, Ky.;  grandchildren, Daniel Ray Willis and Joel Michael Willis, and their mother, Carmen Willis, and Gary Nunley and wife, Jennifer; three great-grandchildren, Garrett Nunley, Riley Nunley and Summer Nunley Poskas; many special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2013 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with the Reverend Kenny Fields officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Tim Watkins, Danny Willis, Donnie Willis, Gary Nunley, Ryan Green, and Ricky Willis. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Vance, Mike Reynolds, and Garrett Nunley.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Monday.
