John Gratton Sluss

TAZEWELL, Va. — TAZEWELL, Va. — John Gratton Sluss, age 80 of Tazewell, Va. died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Va. Born January 9, 1934 in Tazewell County, Va., he was a son of the late, George Gratton Sluss and Mary Witten Sluss. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Sluss was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. In earlier years, he was co owner and operator of Sluss Brothers Packing House of North Tazewell, Va.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Charles Gratton Sluss; and one brother, Donald Ray Sluss.

He is survived by three daughters, Tammy Davidson and Julie Santos and husband, Joe all of Roanoke, Va., and Mary Myers and husband, Tim of North Tazewell, Va.; two sons, John Frank Sluss and wife, Nancy of Williamsburg, Va. and Ron Sluss and wife, Nancy of Roanoke, Va.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and caregiver, Gene Mosley of Tazewell, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va. with Pastor Charlie McGlothlin officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, Va. where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, Va. and Virginia National Guard Honor Team of Gate City, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family requests, memorial contributions be made to the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens 216 College Ridge Rd, Cedar Bluff, VA 24609.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
