TWIN BRANCH —
Sergeant First Class Michael Joe "Joey" Marushia, age 42, of Twin Branch, W.Va. went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, near Superior, W.Va. from injuries he sustained in a automobile accident. Born September 19, 1971 in Welch, W.Va., he was the son of Richard Marushia Sr. of Twin Branch, W.Va. and Charlotte Barber Marushia Addair of Twin Branch, W.Va.
He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith, a graduate of Mt. View High School class of 1992. He was a member of the WV Army National Guard and was a contractor with the guards. SFC Michael Joe Marushia was assigned to the Regional Institute Company, Dawson, W.Va. He served two tours, he served in Iraq in 2004 and in Afghanistan 2010. He earned the Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/ Campaign Star, the Iraq Campaign Medal w/two Campaign Stars, NATO Afghanistan Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, (2nd Award) Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non Commissioned Officer Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd Award), Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/M Device. Michael touched many lives and was loved by all who knew him. He never met a stranger and always brought a smile to those he encountered. He was a loving father, son and brother.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Helen Barber Odham and Vincent Barber; his paternal grandparents, Joe and Blanche Marushia; a special nephew, Chandler Marushia; a special niece, Arianna Johnson; several aunts and uncles.
He leaves to cherish his memory: Two daughters: Josie Michelle Marushia of Bluefield, W.Va. and Kelli Jo Southern and husband Mike of Bluefield, W.Va.; his mother, Charlotte Marushia Addair of Twin Branch, W.Va.; his father, Richard Marushia Sr. of Twin Branch, W.Va.; four sisters: Kimberly Marushia Dotson and husband John "Lucan" Dotson, Tina Marushia of Twin Branch, W.Va., Lisa Marushia Biermann of Sparta, Tennessee, Misty Marushia of Sparta, Tennessee; one brother: Richard Marushia Jr. and companion Leona of Twin Branch, W.Va.; several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at 1:00 P.M. at the W.Va. National Guard Armory, Welch, W.Va. with the Rev. Steve Walker, the Rev. Michael Brooks, and the Rev. Melissa Craft officiating. Burial will follow at the New Community Cemetery, Asco, W.Va., where Military Graveside Services will be conducted by the W.Va. National Guard Honor Guard. Friends may call Tuesday at the W.Va. National Guard Armory, Welch, W.Va. from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Serving as pallbearers will be Charles Allen White, Jordan Dotson, Jonathan Dotson, Richard Marushia III, Jeremy Marushia, and Ronald Bolden.
