William P. “Billy” Browskey

BECKLEY — BECKLEY — It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our most loved, Billy Browskey.  Billy, age 71, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 29th, 2013, following coronary artery bypass surgery at the University of Virginia Hospital with his family by his side.

An only child, Billy was born on Nov. 8th, 1941, in Sophia. His parents were the late, Marianna Milano Lorenz and William Browskey. Billy’s mother later married the late, Walter Ludwig Lorenz, whom Billy loved as a father. Billy was also blessed with spending a large portion of his young life with his maternal grandparents, aunts and uncles while they operated the Sophia Cash Market.

Billy was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

Billy was a proud graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1960.  He was a veteran of the US Army, serving our country during the Korean War.

In 1965, Billy and his mother, Ann started the Char in downtown Beckley with the help of Wally who traveled and worked the printing press business.

His most proud accomplishment, with the help of his mother and friends in the business community, was building Beckley’s dining showplace, The Char in 1975, on Dry Hill Road.

As a result of his lifelong service in the restaurant business, and living most of his life in Beckley, Billy was blessed with an abundance of friends whom he treasured as family.  Billy was a kind, caring, gentle, loving man, who treasured home, family and friends.  In his leisure time, Billy enjoyed shooting sporting clays, visiting the pawn shop and regularly meeting his friends for dinner.

In 1960, Billy married the love of his life, Patty Lusk. To this union was born their beloved daughter, Kimberly Browskey Fairchild and her husband, Gary. He was “Papaw Billy” to Kelli Howell and her companion, Stephen Crigger of Bluefield, Doss Howell and his wife, Amy of Beckley; the proud great-grandfather of Collin and Gavin. On August 13, 2011, with Patty’s passing, a part of Billy went to be with the Lord.

Billy will always be remembered for his passionate love and care of Patty, their parents, their families and friends. His beautiful smile and kind spirit would brighten all our days.

The Rite for Burial of the Dead with Holy Communion will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 4th at 3:00 p.m. at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 200 Virginia Street, Beckley.  The Reverend Roy Gene Crist is the celebrant assisted by the Reverend Jon White.  The family will receive friends at the church from noon until the service hour.

The family suggests donations of sympathy can be made to the Bill and Patty Browskey Memorial Fund,  at the Beckley Area Foundation, 129 Main Street, Suite 203, Beckley, WV  25801

Pallbearers will be, JD Fairchild, Ronnie Taylor, Joe Herrera, Bill Richmond, John (Pee Wee) Mandeville, Jerry Hunter, David Fondale, Brian Williams and Bob Bolen.

Condolences may be sent to the family’s guestbook at
