SWORDS CREEK, Va. —
Mr. William Burbridge “Burb” Vance, Sr., age 81, of Swords Creek, Virginia, passed away Friday (September 20, 2013) in a Richlands, Virginia hospital. Born March 23, 1932 in Paynesville, West Virginia, he was a son of the late William W. and Linnie Victoria Horn Vance. He had lived in Swords Creek for the past thirty years, moving there from West Virginia. He was a 1949 graduate of Iaeger High School and a United States Air Force veteran, having served in the Korean conflict. A disabled coal miner, he had formerly been employed by Jewell Smokeless Coal Company. He attended Ivy Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, William B. “Billy” Vance, Jr., one granddaughter, Rhonda Michelle Vance, and several siblings. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years, Thelma Goodman Vance of the home; two sons, Michael Dwayne Vance and Robert Shawn Vance, Sr. both of Swords Creek; six grandchildren, Devon Vance, Sara Sullivan, Shawna Hankins, Robert Shawn Vance, Jr., Natasha Johnson, and William Jeffery Vance; three great-grandchildren, Kaigan Sullivan, Natalie Vance, and Collin Hankins; one expected great-grandchild; special friends, Elza Hatfield and Joe Sweeney also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with the Rev. Phillip Cook officiating. Interment will follow in the Ward Cemetery at Swords Creek, Virginia.
Military honors will be conducted by American Veterans’ Honor Guard Association and DAV Chapter #31 of Tazewell County, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
