Betty Jane Tracy Corte

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Betty Jane Tracy Corte, 88, of Bluefield, Virginia, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2013, from a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, at GlenWood Retirement Village, Princeton, West Virginia.

Mrs. Corte was born June 5, 1924 in West Union, Ohio the daughter of Harold S. Tracy and her stepmother Mildred Watson Wolfe. As a young girl, she helped her father in his grocery store business. She graduated from West Union High School and proudly received her B.S. in Accounting from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. After graduation from college, she worked for Price Waterhouse, New York, New York where she also led a Girl Scout troop. She returned to her family farm in Southern Ohio for vacation and met her future husband Stelio Corte who was working on a construction project for Norfolk and Western railroad. They married six weeks later and moved to Kimball, West Virginia.

Mrs. Corte worked with her husband and his two brothers, Mirto and Ennio, in the management of Corte Construction Company, Inc. She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, Bluefield, Virginia, where she belonged to the Woolwine Sunday School Class and served as the Chair of the Missions Committee as well as serving in various capacities for other committees.

Mrs. Corte participated in many community activities. She served as the Chairman of the Board for Southwest Virginia Community College and as Chairman of the Board for the Southwest Virginia Community College Educational Foundation. She served on the boards for the Sanders House, Quota, the Community Foundation of the Virginias, Fincastle Country Club, the Bluefield, Virginia Beautification Committee, the Metropolitan Dinner Club, and the Craik-Patton House. She was a member of Quota, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, Bluefield, Virginia Rotary, Bluefield, Virginia Garden Club, the Girls Scouts, the Ohio State President’s Club, and the Sales Executive Club. She was a founding member of the Bluefield Area Foundation.

Mrs. Corte received many awards for service to her community including the Bluefield, Virginia Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship, the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce Robert F. Hamilton award, Mountain Dominion District Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen award, the Bluefield College Mary Mildred Sullivan award, Southwest Virginia Community College Distinguished Service award, and the Bluefield, Virginia Business and Professional Society Citizen of the Year.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Stelio Corte; son, Joe Tracy Corte; brothers, Charles and Harold Tracy.

Mrs. Corte is survived by her daughter: Catherine Corte Payne and husband John of Bluefield, Virginia; granddaughters, Libby Payne Perry of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and Millie Payne Raynor and husband Will of Raleigh, North Carolina; great-grandchildren, Catherine Corte Perry and Ward Bowen Perry, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and their father Ward Perry of Bluefield, West Virginia and Ann Watson Raynor and Elizabeth Reed Raynor of Raleigh, North Carolina; and special caregiver Linda Howard.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 23, 2013, First United Methodist Church, Bluefield, Virginia with the Reverends Brad Scott, Raymond Amos, William D. Scott. Entombment will follow in the Woodlawn Mausoleum in Bluewell, West Virginia. Friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends April 22, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, Bluefield, Virginia from 5:00-8:00 p.m.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Attention: The Chimes Fund, 200 South College Avenue, Bluefield, Virginia 24605.

Dudley Funeral Home of Bluefield, Virginia is in charge of the arrangements.
