STEELSBURG, Va. —
Ralph Viars, age 83, of Steelsburg, Va., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 at his home. Born Dec. 26, 1929 in Panther, he was the son of the late Lewis and Narcie Viars.
He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. Ralph was a well known businessman in Tazewell County. He was an avid supporter of the Democratic Party and worked as an election officer in Buchanan County for several years. He worked in real estate and land development. Later in life, he enjoyed driving his gravel truck. He also enjoyed camping and boating.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Cecil Viars; one sister, Freedis Jones; one granddaughter, Heather Altizer; and one son-in-law, Eugene Long.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Opal Viars; five daughters, Judy Long of Richlands, Va., Jackie Keen and husband James of Grundy, Va., Barbara Sue Harman and husband Jerry of Tazewell, Va., Janet White of Richlands, Va. and Marie Horton of Cedar Bluff, Va.; one son, Michael Viars of Richlands, Va.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Horn of Vansant, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va. with the Rev. Mike Ryan officiating. Those attending the graveside service are requested to meet at the mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Singleton Funeral Service at Cedar Bluff, Va.
