Arnold J. Smith

BLUEFIELD — Arnold J. Smith, 75, of 2320 Cliffmont Avenue, Bluefield, W.Va., passed away Monday, January 21, 2013 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

He is the son of the late James and Martha Smith and was preceded in death by his sister, Stella Sadler.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sandra Webb Smith; daughter, Marsha J. Smith of Huntington, W.Va.; son, Norman W. Smith of Bluefield, W.Va.; sisters, Bea Perry and husband Bob, Helen Lawless, Karen Porshia and husband Elwood, and Brenda Aldridge and husband Doug; beloved dog Abby and grand-dog, Petie. Additional survivors include various nieces and nephews.  

Arnold served with the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis and was stationed in Germany. After returning from active duty, he served in the 304th Military Police Co. of the Army Reserve.  

With a special love of music and an amazing talent, he was one of the original Blue Chords of the 1950s. Throughout the years, Arnold played with various bands, most recently with The Emeralds.  

The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 12:30-2:00 p.m.

A graveside service will follow on Thursday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, Va. at 2:30 p.m. with Minister Dan Webb officiating. Military graveside rites will be provided by the Mercer County Veterans Council and the West Virginia Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be Ron Sagedy, Dwight Bryant, Jack McCormick, Mark Webb, Ronnie Basconi and Mike Webb.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the McDowell County Humane Society.
