BLUEFIELD, Va. — Praise and Glory to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the life of Velma Gillispie Bradshaw. Sunrise for Velma January 7, 1928 Sunset April 10, 2013. Velma was the daughter of the late Mattie Jane and Jefferson Gillispie. Velma dedicated her life to the Lord at an early age, where she was a member of East Graham Christian Church until its closing. After which she became a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she served on the Usher Board, she was the Church and Society Chairman, and also served on the Outreach Ministry Board. Velma attended the Tazewell County School System, and continued her education at Bluefield State College where she obtained a Bachelor of Science and Math Degree. She taught in Tazewell County, Danville, Va,. War, W.Va. and completed her teaching career at Bluefield Middle School. She had such a love for children that she continued to substitute until the age of eighty-four.
Velma devoted her entire life to the happiness of others in doing so she was the caregiver of several in the community and could always be found helping those in need at Westwood Nursing Home where she would faithfully attend to the needs of her Sweet “Janie”.
Velma was affiliated with other community activities which included her being a member of the Link, Inc. Delta Sigma-theta Sorority, Les Modernes, the Bluefield State Alumni Association and the Mercer County School Association.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Charles A. Bradshaw, Sr.; daughter Deborah Cooke; sisters Gwendolyn Gorforth, Yvonne Shanklin; brothers Robert and Donald Gillispie; and a great-grandson Tahj Cooke.
Those left to cherish her memory daughters Sandra Johnson (Michael) of Schuyler, Va., and Sheliah Loftin (James) of Mobile, Alabama; son Charles Bradshaw of the home; her grandchildren Brain and Derrick (she raised as her own) James Jr.; Cheryl, Chandra and Cornell, Jr. ; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sisters Marie Hurt, Nancy Ruth Bradshaw, Barbara Martin, Betty Jean Sales and Mattie Jane Gillispie; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, at 12 Noon from the Tabernacle Baptist Church of Bluefield, Va., with the Rev. Troy Jenkins officiating. Entombment will follow at the Grandview Memorial Gardens Bluefield, Va.
Friends may call one hour prior to service.
