Franklin Delano Smith Sr., 80, of War, passed away Friday, April 5, 2013 at the home of his son in Bennettsville, S.C.
Born March 4, 1933 in Six, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charlie and Nancy Smith. He retired as store manager of Jones and Spry in War, and was a member of the War Town Council. He graduated from Big Creek High School in War and was the “Voice of the Owls” announcer for their football games for 30 years. He was a member of the War Kiwanis Club, and attended the Emmanuel Baptist Church in War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Maxine Smith; and two stepsons, Stanley and Charles Carter.
Those left to cherish his memory are his son and daughter-in-law, Franklin Delano Smith Jr. and Aileen Dishman Smith of Bennettsville, S.C.; his step daughter-in-law, Shirley Carter Harless; three sisters, Bobby Bowman of Bluefield, Va., Ruby Jo Saffell of Palm Coast, Fla., and Thalma Kidd of Shreveport, La.; two granddaughters, Michelle Smith Hilton and Tony Smith Norton both of Bennettsville; four step grandchildren, Mary Sue Smith, Stanley Carter, Sherry Perdue and John Carter; and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, April 9, at 11 a.m. at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in War with the Rev. Spencer Oxford officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell.
Friends may call at the church Monday from 6-8 p.m.
Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.
