Andrew Ray Akers, 77, of Hiawatha, died Friday, March 29, 2013 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born July 25, 1935 in Elkhorn, he was the son of the late Alford Ray Akers and Annie Frazier Akers.
Mr. Akers worked for Blankenship's Garage and Howard's Garage both in Matoaka. He attended Bridge Baptist Church in Matoaka. He loved fishing and working puzzle books.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Akers; and three sisters, Frances Jones, Barbara McKinney and Willie May Randolph.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Shirley Hartwell Akers; three daughters, Tina Marie Akers and Reggie Thompson of Kegley, Sandra Rye and Jake Rye of Hiawatha and Kayla Akers and Eric Rye of Princeton; one stepdaughter, Sherry Akers of Kansas; two sons, Patrick Akers of Hiawatha and Jimmy Akers of Princeton; three brothers, Eugene Akers and his wife Shirley of McComas, Samuel Akers and his wife Carol of Pinoak, and Mitchell Akers and his wife Helga of Georgia; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Revs. Tom Carpenter and Robert Kinder officiating. Interment will follow at the Hiawatha Community Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 3, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until service hour at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
