Deacon Purcell Buford

BLUEFIELD — Deacon Purcell “Mule” “Blood” Buford Sr., 88, of Bluefield, WV, passed away March 20, 2014, at Bluefield Regional Hospital, Bluefield, WV.

Purcell was born in Pulaski, Virginia to William and Annie Buford on April 1, 1925. He attended Genoa High School and worked for Norfolk and Western Railroad, of Bluefield, WV. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Olive MBC of Bluefield, WV, where he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Chairman of the Trustee Board, Superintendent of the Sunday School, Church Treasurer, a member of the Gospel Chorus, and Senior Choir. He was also a member of the Men's Club and served as the church bus driver (Rollercoaster Hill). He coached Little League Football and Basketball for the Bluefield Recreation Department and enjoyed singing, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Purcell is preceded in death by his parents, William and Annie Buford; sixteen brothers and sisters, two sons Purcell Buford Jr. and Jayce Collins Jr. and one great grandchild Toni Howze.

Purcell is survived by his wife Mary Buford, of Bluefield, WV, His children Barbara Farrer of Columbus, OH, Francis “Tina” Howze  of Bluefield, WV, Lynn (Yvonne) Buford of Bluefield, WV, Timothy Buford of Bluefield, WV, Earl (Donna Gayle) Collins of Columbus, OH, George (Winnetta) Collins of Adrian, MI, Nannie (Frank) Epps of Atlanta, Ga., Dr. Rev. Edward (Bobbi) Buford Sr. of Houston, TX, Priscilla L. Buford of Bluefield, WV, Angelia Buford-Hayes of Charlotte, NC, April Stores of Charlotte, NC, Kevin (Andrea) Buford Sr. of Charlotte, NC, 50 Grandchildren, and 106 Great Grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Mt. Olive MBC, 205 Logan Street in Bluefield, WV on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

 Funeral service will be held at Greater Mt Zion Pentecostal Church in Bluefield on Thursday, March 27, 2014 12:00 pm with the Reverend Charles H. Collins Sr. of Mt. Olive MBC officiating.

 Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 6605 New Hope Road, Bluefield WV.
