WALKERTON, Va. — James (Jim - Jumbo) Benton Smith, 67, of Walkerton, Va., passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at his home. Born July 20, 1945 in Stephenson, W.Va., he was the son of the late Elmer Smith and Mildred Bailey Smith.

James was a 1963 graduate of Herndon High School at Herndon, W.Va. A 22-year Air Force Veteran, he worked in Communications with many assignments worldwide. He then retired and continued to work for 18 years as a Department of Defense contractor for the National Security Agency at Ft. Meade, Md. Since 2002 he retired with his wife to Walkerton, Va. He was an avid handyman and could fix anything. He loved his children and grandchildren he will be greatly missed by many. He was a devoted family man who loved his roots at Beartown, W.Va. and loved bringing his grandchildren back to Beartown to experience those roots also.  

Survivors include his wife of 49 years Patricia (Patty) Spicer Smith, formerly of McComas, W.Va.; four children Karen Smith Garland and her husband Eric and their son Daniel of Canton, Ga.; Tammy Smith Hixson, her son Jason and wife Bre Cobb Hixson of Colonial Beach, Va. and two daughters Amber and Cassy of Walkerton, Va.; daughter Sheri Smith Wagner and husband Jay of Laurel, Md. and Sheri's son Andrew Smith and wife Krystal U.S. Army (Ft. Bragg, N.C.) currently serving in Afghanistan and Andrew's daughter Maddison;  son Christopher Smith and his wife Lauren Garside Smith and their children Katie, Scott and Allie of Taneytown, Md. Sister Barbara Smith Warrington of Woodstock, Va.; sister Sandra Smith Arnold and her daughter Tracey Arnold Ballew of Newton, N.C. and brother Michael Smith and wife Crystal of Meadowbridge, W.Va. and Michael's daughters Rachel Smith Quesenberry and Hannah Smith of Cool Ridge, W.Va. He had eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastors Larry Roberts and Michael Davis, officiating. Interment will follow at the Milam Cemetery at Beartown where full military honors will be conducted by the Seymour Johnson AFB Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Beartown Community Center, Rt. 1, Box 162, Matoaka, WV 24736.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 20, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
