Lloyd Starling Davis Sr., 92, of West Main Street in Princeton, died Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Princeton Community Hospital. Born November 21, 1920, in McCreary County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Roscoe Davis and Cordelia Keith Davis.
Lloyd was the founder of Lloyd's Pastry Shop in Princeton. He and his wife owned and operated the bakery for numerous years and created a Princeton landmark that will always be remembered for their famous rolls, cakes, and pastries. He was a 53-year member of Princeton First Church of the Nazarene where he formerly served as Sunday school superintendent. Lloyd trained as a cook with the Civilian Conservation Corp in Nevada. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served as a cook and was a veteran of World War II.
He had been a resident of Princeton since 1950 moving here from Boone County, W.Va. He was an avid fisherman and loved his church and family. Lloyd lovingly cared for his wife for ten years prior to her death in 2011.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Leona Mae Ball Davis; one grandson, Jimmy Tibbs; two brothers, Arnold and Harvey Davis; and three sisters, Lucy Davis, Alpha Davis, and Oma Kinder.
He is survived by two sons, Lloyd S. “Poochie” Davis Jr. and wife Nancy of Princeton, and Gary Wayne Davis and wife Deborah of Hagerstown, Md.; one daughter, Carolyn Sue Gibson and husband Tom of Rocky Gap, Va.; nine grandchildren, Theron Davis and wife Heather, Robin Morrello and husband Toney, Sherri Hull and husband Pete, Terri Carter and husband Harry, Staci Davis and fiancé Steve Robleski, Aaron Davis and fiancée Amber McSherry, Sydney Williams, Benjamin Allison, and Ross Allison; eleven great-grandchildren, Brady Davis, Halen Morrello, Cassie Kist, Daryl Stanley and wife Bridgette, Kaitlyn and McKenzie Carter, Allison and Lindsey Hull, Robin Allison, Nancy Williams, and David Gibson; five great-great-grandchildren, Selena, James, and Kayla Kist, and Levi and Ariella Stanley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Princeton First Church of the Nazarene on Oakvale Road with Pastor John Branham officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and Mercer County Veteran's Council.
