Ralph C. Shrewsberry, 86, of Oakvale, died Thursday, April 25, 2013 at his residence. Born February 7, 1927 in Bud, W.Va., he was the son of the late Cyrus Monroe Shrewsbury and Susie Mae Quillian Shrewsbury.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II and the Korean War. Ralph was a retired coal miner for Consol with twenty years service, a member of the UMWA, and a member of the local miner's union at Helen, W.Va. He was an expert carpenter helping with the construction of many homes and churches. Ralph was of the Church of God faith and had been a resident of the area most of his life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ross M. Shrewsbury; and two sisters, Aretta Shrewsbury and Athena Kirby.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years, Shirley Caroline Swim Shrewsberry; two daughters, Barbara Smith and husband Danny and Drema Comer and husband Larry all of Oakvale; four grandchildren, Joey Weatherly and wife Candi of Oakvale, Kristy Dunkley and husband Buddy of Beckley, W.Va., Angela Wachter and husband Ben of Gum Springs, Va., and Craig Comer and wife Tonia of Princeton; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank Shrewsbury and wife Mary Jo of Massachusetts, Howard Shrewsbury of Princeton, and Wayne Shrewsbury and wife Nadine of California; and two sisters, Lorene Howell of Princeton and Elaine Cook of Ghent, W.Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 29, 2013 at the G.E. Davis Chapel of Fredeking Funeral Service in Oakvale with Pastor Roger Hatfield and Pastor Archie Bowling officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12 noon until the service hour on Monday.
