Doris Jean Lockhart

HAYMARKET, Va. — After living a life filled with love, family and many friends, Doris Jean Matherly Lockhart age 77, of  Haymarket, Virginia, formerly of Lerona, West Virginia, went home to our heavenly father on Monday, March 24, 2014.

Born March 1st 1937 in Dott, West Virginia she was the daughter of the late John Lloyd “Buster” Matherly, Sr. and Mary Margaret Mansfield Matherly. Doris Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years Eugene Grover Lockhart, Sr.  

Doris Jean graduated Valedictorian of Spanishburg High School in 1955. She then received her Bachelor's Degree from Concord College and her Master's Degree from Marshal University. She was a beloved and sometimes feared math teacher for over 40 years. Doris Jean spent the majority of her teaching career at Athens High school in Athens, WV and retired from Pikeview High School in Princeton, WV at the end of the 1997 school year.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and attended Painters Chapel UMC in Speedway, WV. Doris Jean was also a member and past Worthy Matron of Athens Chapter #33, Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her four children, daughter Reverend Canessa Ann Stafford (and husband Kenneth) of Waxhaw, NC; daughter Veneicia Carole Lockhart of Haymarket, VA; son Eugene Grover Lockhart Jr. (and wife Lorraine) of North Canton, OH; daughter Mary Maxine “Mimi” Fuchs (and husband Tim) of Columbus, OH. Doris Jean was the loving grandmother of seven grandchildren, Christopher Henderson (and wife Leath), Amanda Workman, Amber Farris (and husband Jason), Cody Lockhart, Charlie Fuchs, Allison Lockhart, Abbigail Fuchs and Madeline Fuchs; and one great grandson Avery Henderson. She was also blessed with four step grandchildren Kathleen Kundrat (and husband Jon), Grace Rojek, Andrew Rojek and Daniel Rojek.

Doris Jean was also preceded in death by her infant brother Jerry Eugene Matherly and is survived by four siblings, Ellen “Trixie” Scott (and husband Bob) of Spring City, TN; Roger Matherly (and wife Lisa) of Flattop, WV; Patricia Ann Hall of Princeton, WV; and John Matherly, Jr. (and wife Cathy) of Waynesboro, VA. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday (today), March 30th 2014 at Painters Chapel UMC in Speedway, WV, with the Reverend Tommy Mounts officiating. Burial will follow at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV. Family will serve as pallbearers. Friends called at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton, WV from 4-6 PM on Saturday, March 29th where Athens Chapter #33, Order of the Eastern Star conducted a service at 5:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pikeview High School - Doris Lockhart Math Scholarship Fund, 3566 Eads Mill Road, Princeton, WV 24740.
